Avoid the Double-Distribution Tax Trap
Taxpayers are required to begin taking RMDs by April 1st of the year following their 73rd birthday; however, waiting until this deadline can result in two RMDs being taken in a single calendar year.
Taking two distributions in one year often pushes the taxpayer into a higher tax bracket, increasing their overall tax liability. Ed Slott, a tax expert, recommends taking the first RMD in the year one turns 73 to spread the tax burden across two separate tax years, thereby potentially lowering the tax bill in each year.
