TECNO Unveils '0mm Bezel' Concept Phone, Challenging Industry Norms

For years, the screen-to-body ratio was a key marketing metric for new smartphones, frequently highlighted during product launches. The industry was driven by the goal of maximizing the display area, ideally approaching 100% screen coverage, with a general consensus that less bezel equated to better performance and a more immersive user experience.

Marques Brownlee recalls, "Do you remember back in the day when screen to body ratio was one of those like headlining numbers in a new smartphone presentation?" This collective push aimed to make the front of a smartphone almost entirely display.

Manufacturers have employed various innovative techniques to reduce or hide bezels over the years. Early examples include devices like the Xiaomi Mi Mix, which pioneered creative display designs to minimize surrounding borders. Samsung later adopted curved 'waterfall' displays, creating the illusion of almost no bezels on the sides of the phone.

Marques Brownlee noted, "And then phones with curved edges like Samsung started doing for a couple years with that whole waterfall display thing to make it feel like you had almost no bezels at all on the sides of the phone." Even more extreme was the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha, which featured a display that wrapped almost entirely around the device to its back.

Despite their aesthetic appeal, extremely curved displays presented several practical drawbacks. These designs often reduced the overall durability of the phone, making the screen more susceptible to damage from drops. They also significantly increased glare and reflections, particularly on the curved edges, hindering visibility.

As Marques Brownlee pointed out, "there are actually some downsides to curving the displays over the edges less durable, more reflections, accidental touches, all this stuff." Furthermore, the sensitivity of the curved edges frequently led to accidental touches, impacting usability and prompting many manufacturers to scale back on extreme curves.

Modern premium smartphones typically feature very thin bezels, often measuring between 1 and 2 millimeters. However, despite these advancements, public critiques regarding current bezel thickness sometimes appear excessive, reflecting an almost impossible standard. Marques Brownlee observed, "It's gotten so good that some people will actually see a phone that looks like this and leave a comment like this saying the thickness of these bezels is unacceptable, which has always to me felt a little bit ridiculous."

Marques Brownlee received an email from the company, inviting him to review this innovative device, which aims to redefine the standard for screen aesthetics. The concept phone boasts a 6.7-inch display, meticulously designed to achieve an edge-to-edge screen appearance without any visible borders.

As Marques Brownlee stated, "fast forward to 2026 and I get an email from a company called Techno who wants to show their 0 millimeter bezel concept phone." The phone's design is an ambitious attempt to push the boundaries of smartphone displays, promising an immersive visual experience unlike any other.

Upon closer inspection, the TECNO concept phone reveals a visible silver mid-frame that encircles the entire screen. This distinction highlights a critical difference between the physical metallic frame of the phone and what is typically understood as a display bezel—the black border that usually separates the screen from the phone's housing. Marques Brownlee explains, "But what we're actually looking at here all the way around the screen is the literal frame of the phone."

This design choice forces a re-evaluation of what constitutes a 'bezel' and how manufacturers define 'bezel-less.' A comparison with devices like the Pixel 11 Pro further emphasizes this mechanical distinction, showcasing that while the display itself might extend to the very edge of the internal components, the phone's outer structure still forms a protective border.

The secret behind TECNO's 0mm bezel concept lies in its advanced internal display stacking technology. This innovative method allows the display to sit completely flat against the phone's internal structure, creating an uninterrupted, borderless visual effect. The metallic frame, which is distinct from the display itself, is designed to be slightly raised above the screen surface.

As Marques Brownlee revealed, "the secret, the way they're achieving this is with internal display stacking." This elevation provides a subtle yet effective barrier, offering some protection to the display while maintaining the illusion of a truly bezel-less front. The design essentially integrates the display so seamlessly into the phone's body that the traditional black bezel becomes obsolete, leaving only the structural frame visible.
