Justin Verlander's Legendary MLB Career

DeRosa distinguishes Verlander from other pitching legends like Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina, and Kevin Brown, noting that he encountered those pitchers later in their careers while facing Verlander at the beginning of his own. He recalls a 2005-2006 Rangers game where Verlander's velocity and movement in his early career intimidated his teammates.

Verlander quickly established himself in MLB, winning the 2006 Rookie of the Year award and helping the Detroit Tigers reach the World Series in the same year.

He threw his first no-hitter on June 12, 2007, signaling his elite potential, and reached a career peak in 2011 with a remarkable 24-5 record, a 2.40 ERA, and 251 innings pitched, securing the Cy Young, MVP, and the AL pitching Triple Crown through absolute domination.

Verlander was a formidable opponent for the Oakland Athletics in the postseason, consistently stifling their lineup in 2012 and 2013.

His mid-season move to the Houston Astros in August 2017 via waiver wire proved transformative, as he immediately posted a 5-0 record with a 1.06 ERA in five regular-season starts, and he subsequently embraced analytics in Houston.

Verlander required meticulous detail in pitch signs and constant engagement, exemplified by his laser focus and intensity during the 6th inning of the 2017 ALCS against the New York Yankees.

In a crucial moment against Gary Sanchez, then the Yankees' primary offensive threat, Verlander faced a 3-0 count but deliberately avoided shaking off his catcher, Brian McCann, to prevent tipping his pitch selection.

He stepped off the mound to reset and mentally manipulate the hitter, ultimately throwing a slider instead of the anticipated fastball to record a pivotal out.

This strategic play underscored his mastery of the mental game and contributed to his eventual ALCS MVP award.

In 2019, Verlander recorded a dominant season with a 21-6 record, a 2.58 ERA across 34 starts, and secured his second Cy Young Award, alongside throwing his third career no-hitter in Toronto on September 1st.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery, Verlander made a remarkable return in 2022, achieving an 18-4 record with a 1.75 ERA, culminating in his third Cy Young Award and second World Series title.

Ranking among the all-time elite alongside Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson, Justin Verlander holds that achieving true greatness necessitates total immersion and an unwavering commitment to the game.

His historical standing is solidified by comparisons to legendary pitchers such as Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, and Randy Johnson, as he ranks among the top players in career Cy Young top-five finishes and seasons with an ERA+ of 120 or higher.

The question of whether he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Detroit Tiger or a Houston Astro remains a point of debate, highlighting his significant impact on both franchises.
