Ugly Duckling finds beauty; gingerbread man escapes all

Six ducklings hatch initially with joy, but the seventh, largest egg takes longer to hatch, leaving the mother duck growing concerned about the delayed arrival. Six hatch quickly, filling the nest with joy. The seventh, the largest of them all, takes far longer to emerge.

Mother Duck grows concerned as days pass and only silence comes from the final egg. Her worry mounts as she continues to wait for the delayed duckling to break through its shell.

When the seventh duckling finally hatches, he is noticeably different: much broader than his siblings, with gray and white feathers instead of the yellow down that covers the others. His siblings immediately begin to mock him for how he looks.

The other young ducks taunt him, calling him ugly and saying he looks nothing like them. Mother Duck attempts to shield him from their cruelty, but the duckling sinks into deep sadness, tormented by his own appearance and the rejection it brings.

Hunters arrive at the farm and begin attacking the ducks. During the chaos, Mother Duck disappears while searching for food, leaving the Ugly Duckling alone. He loses the one creature who tried to protect him.

Desperate to find others like himself, he ventures beyond the farm. A dog and a chicken he meets refuse to associate with him. At a new lake, geese warn him that hunters are everywhere and tell him to move on.

With no safe place remaining, the duckling resolves to search alone for ducks that resemble him, if they exist at all.

The duckling decides to hide permanently to escape further rejection, finding a strange comfort in being alone. As he grows, he witnesses beautiful white long-necked birds migrating south across the sky—creatures of grace and elegance that captivate him entirely.

He wishes desperately to be like them, knowing he can never match their beauty. Then winter arrives with its first snowfall, and the duckling faces a harsh new test of survival.

Heavy snow covers the ground, making food nearly impossible to find. The duckling grows weak and cold, unable to survive the brutal winter on his own. A farmer discovers him in this desperate state and, moved by pity, carries him home.

The farmer provides food, warmth, and care through the coldest months. Under this protection, the duckling slowly recovers his strength and waits for spring to arrive.

When spring comes, the farmer releases the duckling into a lake. The moment the duck looks at his own reflection in the water, he becomes confused—his body is no longer what he remembers. His white feathers, his long neck, his elegant form match the reflection's every movement perfectly.

He has transformed into one of the beautiful birds he admired from afar. A boy standing at the lakeshore confirms what the swan now understands: he is beautiful, and he is a swan.

An elderly couple lives alone in a small shack, their only regret that they have no children. To fill the emptiness, the old lady decides to bake a gingerbread man cookie, carefully shaping him from dough.

She fashions his features with raisins for eyes, candy for a nose, and cream for his hair and clothes. When she adds a cream mouth for the final touch, something extraordinary happens: the gingerbread man comes alive, speaks, and thanks her for bringing him into existence.

Despite their desperate efforts to catch him, he proves far too quick. He shouts as he flees that no one can catch him because he is the gingerbread man, and he maintains his lead as he races away.

The cow and the elderly woman both pursue him relentlessly, but the gingerbread man maintains his lead, outpacing every creature with ease.

A pig sees the gingerbread man in its path and attempts to catch him. The gingerbread man taunts the pig, claiming that the old lady and the cow have already failed, and this pig will too. The pig joins the growing group chasing him.

A chicken, searching for food, also spots the cookie and begins running after him alongside the pig, the cow, and the elderly woman. Yet none of them can close the distance as he continues his frantic escape.

The gingerbread man reaches a river and stops short, fearing the water will dissolve him as it would any cookie. A shifty-looking fox approaches and claims he knows how to swim and can carry the gingerbread man safely across.

Despite his initial suspicion, the gingerbread man trusts the fox and agrees to the help, climbing onto the animal's back to be ferried across the water.

As they wade into the river, the water rises higher. The fox tells the gingerbread man the water is too deep and coaxes him to move from his back to his head. Then, claiming the water rises further still, the fox directs him to his nose—moving him steadily closer to the fox's mouth.

Once the gingerbread man reaches the fox's nose, the fox flips him into the air, intending to swallow him whole. A crow flying overhead sees this happen and immediately swoops down, catching the gingerbread man in its beak and carrying him to safety as the fox snaps at the air in rage.

The crow carries the gingerbread man high into the air, having saved him from the fox's jaws. When the crow opens its beak to speak, the gingerbread man loses his grip and tumbles downward.

He hits the ground and immediately begins running as fast as he can, resuming his endless flight. The narrator warns that no one will ever catch the gingerbread man—his escape will go on forever.
