Infant Hospitalized with Pneumonia Due to Restrictive Raw Vegan Diet
A mother admitted her baby to Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, where the infant was diagnosed with pneumonia and found to be suffering from significant weight loss, dropping from the 25th to the 3rd weight percentile in one month.
The parents explained they had placed the baby on a raw vegan diet consisting primarily of almond milk, tofu, and vegetables after she stopped breastfeeding, leading Dr. House to sarcastically criticize the diet's lack of essential fats and proteins, resulting in an emergency IV feeding for the infant.
