Investors Miss Cybercab's Momentum, Says ARK Invest

ARK Invest’s recent analysis highlights Tesla's significant progress in autonomous driving, with unsupervised miles surging from 380,000 to 1 million in just six weeks. This rapid advancement indicates a strong developmental trajectory for Tesla's self-driving technology. Additionally, Cybercab rides in Austin are proving to be 40% cheaper compared to Model Y robotaxis, suggesting substantial cost efficiencies. ARK projects potential operating costs could drop to as low as 25 cents per mile at scale, making the service highly competitive. The firm also identifies the strategic recruitment of external fleet buyers as a crucial element in Tesla's scaling ambitions.

This initiative signals Tesla's strategic intent to build a broad commercial network for its robotaxi services. Fleet owners are viewed as an essential component of the robotaxi value chain, providing necessary infrastructure and local operational support. ARK Invest anticipates that third parties will ultimately own the majority of this expanding network, indicating a decentralized operational model.

Larry Goldberg emphasizes that the success of ride-sharing platforms like Uber, and the future robotaxi industry, hinges on the ability to manage demand surges effectively. Daily demand for ride-share services is highly uneven, with peak periods occurring during commutes, special events, and vacation times. Without flexible access to extra autonomous vehicles, service gaps inevitably emerge, leading to unmet demand and reduced profitability for operators. Building a network capable of handling these fluctuating demands is therefore crucial for industry sustainability and growth.

Inconsistent demand throughout the day typically results in thin profit margins, but the ability to meet peak demand allows for premium pricing and optimized resource utilization. Larry Goldberg argues that this capability is the key to outperforming Uber, as it allows for superior pricing strategies at both normal and peak demand levels. The private ownership of Full Self-Driving (FSD) vehicles is identified as a critical factor in providing the necessary surge capacity for such a network.

This approach distinguishes between 'Tesla-serviced' cities, where the company might operate directly, and 'franchised' or rural markets. Fleet owners are thus essential for extending the Cybercab service footprint beyond major urban centers, filling operational gaps where direct Tesla involvement would be impractical or inefficient.

The first type includes fleet owners who operate in non-Tesla service areas, providing crucial infrastructure and services where Tesla itself does not have a direct presence. These operators are seen as valuable partners in expanding the network's reach. The second type consists of 'swing' or individual owners who attempt to compete in cities already directly serviced by Tesla. Goldberg suggests that these individuals are likely to face significant challenges and struggle against Tesla's own established service infrastructure, highlighting the importance of strategic positioning within the network.

This innovative design eliminates the need for traditional hydraulic brake fluid, lines, and plumbing, streamlining the vehicle's mechanics and reducing potential points of failure. Instead, the system utilizes a dedicated actuator at each wheel caliper, providing precise and responsive braking control. Additionally, the Cybercab boasts a robust 293 miles of range and is equipped with a large 22-inch display screen, enhancing both operational efficiency and user experience.

Elon Musk has set an even more ambitious goal of reducing this to just 5 seconds per vehicle off the assembly line. This high-frequency production strategy is crucial for scaling the Cybercab fleet rapidly and meeting the anticipated demand for robotaxi services. Achieving such speeds would represent a significant leap in manufacturing efficiency within the automotive industry.
