SpaceX Begins Phasing Out Falcon 9 for Starship

SpaceX is redirecting its core strategy from the Falcon 9, which has served as the company's primary launch vehicle for years, towards the development and deployment of the more powerful Starship. This pivot signals a major change in the company's operational priorities and future trajectory.

"Now, SpaceX is shifting its focus toward the far more powerful Starship."

"After three consecutive launch failures, SpaceX finally achieved two successes, milestones that helped save the company from bankruptcy"

"Once Starship is flying reliably several times per week, it makes sense to shift super scarce SpaceX engineering and production resources to Starship to get launch rate to several times per day, which means winding down Falcon."

By August 25, 2026, the Falcon 9 rocket had achieved 100 launches, a significant milestone.

However, projections for 2026 estimate between 140 and 155 launches, indicating a potential decline that would interrupt the consistent annual growth the rocket has maintained since 2019. Notably, a single booster also set a record with its 37th flight.

"If the current trend continues, Falcon 9 could finish 2026 with roughly 140 to 155 launches, a potential decline that would break the uninterrupted growth the rocket has maintained since 2019."

This shift was visibly marked by the removal of the crew access arm from LC39A in February 2026, as LC39A is being primarily prepared for Starship and Falcon Heavy missions.

The final Falcon 9 landing at Landing Zone 1 occurred on August 1, 2025, and the Just Read the Instructions (JRTI) drone ship has been repurposed for Starship operations, further illustrating the transition.

"LC39A was being prepared primarily for Starship and Falcon Heavy."

While new commercial orders are being phased out, government, military, and NASA missions will continue to be supported by the Falcon 9.

This strategic decision underscores SpaceX's firm commitment to transitioning into the Starship era, where the new launch system is expected to handle future commercial and governmental needs.

"The company would no longer accept dedicated Falcon 9 and ride share orders beyond 2028."

The Falcon 9 rocket has now achieved approximately 682 launches, an extraordinary figure that highlights its reliability and SpaceX's ability to conduct launches on an industrial scale.

For three consecutive years, from 2024 to 2026, the Falcon 9 has completed over 100 launches annually, a feat that, for other national space industries, would typically require multiple rocket families.

"The rocket has now reached approximately 682 launches. An extraordinary figure that reflects not only its reliability, but also SpaceX's ability to manufacture, prepare, and launch rockets on an industrial scale."

By August 25th, 2026, Falcon boosters had successfully completed hundreds of landings, with these recovered stages subsequently flying hundreds of additional missions.

This extensive real-world flight history has provided compelling evidence that orbital-class rocket reuse is not only feasible but also operationally viable.

Notably, Booster B1067 achieved a record 37 flight and landing cycles, demonstrating hardware durability through standardized maintenance and refurbishment protocols, and proving that reusing boosters significantly lowers costs and avoids manufacturing constraints.

"By August 25th of 2026, Falcon boosters had completed hundreds of successful landings with those recovered stages subsequently flying hundreds of additional missions. That realworld flight history has provided some of the strongest evidence yet that orbital class rocket reuse is not merely possible but operationally viable."

The Falcon 9 maintains a critical role beyond commercial satellite launches, supporting essential U.S. military and national security payloads that demand high reliability and precise scheduling.

It also remains crucial for NASA's human spaceflight and cargo programs, ensuring continued support for the International Space Station.

Falcon 9 will uphold its high reliability until Starship is fully operational, guaranteeing the continuity of these vital missions during the transition period.

"That matters because Falcon 9 supports far more than commercial satellite launches. Its missions include critical US military and national security payloads where reliability and precise scheduling are essential."

Starship is designed to significantly surpass Falcon 9's capabilities, standing over 120 meters tall and with future versions (V3 and V4) projected to carry 100 tons and potentially 200 tons to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), respectively.

Its primary advantage lies in its massive size and fully reusable design for both stages, with recent flights demonstrating steady progress towards key milestones such as orbital flight, Mechazilla captures, and rapid reuse, paving the way for satellite constellations, Artemis missions, and lunar/Mars transport.

"Standing over 120 m tall, future versions could carry around 100 tons to LEO with V3 and potentially 200 tons with V4. But its biggest advantage is in size. Both stages are designed to be fully reusable with recent flights demonstrating steady progress toward that goal."

Falcon 9's most significant achievement transcends any single record, as it fundamentally transformed the economics of spaceflight by demonstrating that rockets can reliably land, return, and be reused as part of a sustainable operational system.

It stands as a symbol of bold engineering and persistent innovation, challenging traditional rocket norms and laying the foundational groundwork for Starship's even larger ambitions.

"But its greatest achievement wasn't any single record. It was proving that rockets could land, return, and fly again as part of a sustainable operational system."
