Police Block Drumcree Orange Order Parade

The Orange Order, a unionist organization, had planned a controversial parade in Portadown, Northern Ireland, which was intended to proceed down Garvaghy Road, but Irish nationalist protesters successfully blocked the route.

The standoff occurred near Drumcree Church, where approximately 30 members of the Orange Order had been waiting for about 24 hours to begin their march. Police intervened to halt the marchers at their land rovers after they moved down the hill.

Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Heaton-Harris is currently engaged in discussions with various political parties in an effort to resolve the ongoing tensions caused by the parade's blockage. Residents of Garvaghy Road are scheduled to meet with both the Northern Ireland Secretary and the region's senior police officer to discuss the situation.

First Minister Michelle O'Neill of the Irish Nationalist Party, Sinn Féin, stood with the protesters on Garvaghy Road, calling their successful blockage a victory, while DUP leader Gavin Robinson accused O'Neill of violating her oath of office by supporting an unlawful protest. This political divide threatens the stability of Northern Ireland's regional power-sharing devolved government.
