The Overlooked Heroes of the 9/11 Boatlift

Jack Posobiec emphasized the crucial role of educating his sons about the September 11 attacks, as the 25th anniversary approaches.

He aims to share stories that go beyond the tragedy, focusing on acts of heroism and resilience, following a recent family visit to Ground Zero and the memorials in Manhattan.

The United States Coast Guard issued an emergency call for assistance, asking "All boats, if you are willing to aid in the evacuation of Manhattan, come at once."

Hundreds of vessels, including ferries, tugboats, yachts, and personal boats, immediately responded to the call, ignoring regulations to evacuate citizens trapped by the shutdown of bridges and subways.

Posobiec described the participants in the boatlift as 'real New Yorkers' who risked their lives for strangers, exemplifying true American heroism.

Heroism, he suggested, is not about superhuman feats but about regular people willing to put themselves in harm's way for others they had never met before, demonstrating spontaneous and selfless service in the face of danger.
