Stoke Space's Nova Rocket Eyes Reusability

Stoke Space initiated its development with the Hopper 2 prototype, which notably shared visual characteristics with SpaceX's Starhopper.

The company is now concentrating its efforts on Nova, a two-stage rocket explicitly engineered for full reusability, backed by a $1 billion Series E funding round to bolster its development and infrastructure. Nova Block 1 is slated for its inaugural launch in 2027, with the more advanced Block 2 version targeted for 2029.

The rocket features an approximate diameter of 4.6 meters and incorporates a 5-meter payload fairing, with its booster design transitioning to two large propellant tanks and a more complex engine configuration that could include up to 14 engines on the booster. The second stage utilizes 12 independent engines, each equipped with dual thrust chambers, along with 24 hydrogen booster chambers, supporting a projected payload capacity of 15 tons to low Earth orbit for reusable configurations and 22 tons for expendable ones.

Nova Block 2's exterior design integrates visual elements reminiscent of the Falcon 9, while its internal philosophy, utilizing stainless steel construction and methalox propellant, closely aligns with SpaceX’s Starship technical approach.

Stoke Space is actively investing in an actively cooled heat shield technology for the upper stage, a critical component for reusability, with the shift away from a tapered upper stage primarily driven by the need to accommodate increased propellant capacity.

SpaceX has set the industry benchmark for reusability with its Falcon 9 and Starship programs, driving numerous competitors, including Blue Origin with New Glenn, China with Zhuque 3 and Long March 10B, and Rocket Lab with Neutron, to develop their own reusable architectures.

While most of these competitors are currently focused on partial reusability, Stoke Space aims for a full recovery model, positioning Nova Block 2 to drastically lower launch costs and increase frequency if successful, potentially challenging SpaceX at a similar level.

The company plans to launch its Nova Block 1 Pathfinder in 2027 and aims to fly the larger Nova Block 2 variant in 2029, with the overarching goal of establishing an entirely reusable launch system.

This positioning raises concerns that Nova Block 2 might be too large for highly specialized niche markets yet too small to directly compete with Starship's heavy-lift capabilities, with additional questions arising due to the absence of a visible grid fin system for booster recovery.

The Nova Block 2 is not projected to achieve its first flight until 2029, a significant timing disadvantage.

By that time, SpaceX is expected to have achieved a considerably higher launch cadence and lower operational costs with Starship, potentially narrowing Stoke Space's commercial window and intensifying market competition.

Stoke Space's primary competitive advantage lies in its design, which is optimized for rapid turnaround and full reusability, a critical factor for reducing launch costs and increasing accessibility to space.

Recent setbacks experienced by competitors such as Blue Origin with New Glenn and ULA with Vulcan have created an opportune opening for Stoke Space to potentially capture market share and establish its presence in the evolving space launch industry.
