Veritasium Unveils New Channel 'InGenius'

Veritasium announced the launch of a new channel, "InGenius," to explore stories that did not fully fit their main, physics-focused platform. The team recognized that many compelling narratives about societal and global systems required a dedicated space.

InGenius will delve into how complex global systems and society operate, promising to maintain Veritasium's signature rigor and depth of understanding while shifting its focus from hard science to social science topics.

One of the initial stories featured on InGenius will examine how the shipping container, described as a "$40 hunk of metal," rewired the modern world. This seemingly simple invention played a crucial role in enabling China to emerge as a global manufacturing superpower.

The channel will also explore how the shipping container concept inspired former spy Yuan Geng to establish capitalism in his home county. The origins of this transformative idea trace back to Malcolm McLean, a frustrated truck driver in 1937.

In 1937, Malcolm McLean, then 24 years old, experienced firsthand the inefficiencies of cargo shipping while waiting an entire day to unload bales of cotton at the Hoboken port. The traditional method required longshoremen to manually transfer individual items between trucks and ships.

Frustrated by the time-consuming process, McLean conceived an idea that would revolutionize the industry: directly placing the entire back of a truck, or its trailer, onto a ship. This vision aimed to eliminate the need for laborious individual handling and significantly speed up turnaround times.

The traditional shipping methods of the 1950s involved immense inefficiencies, with a single vessel like the SS Warrior carrying nearly 195,000 individual items that all required manual handling. Cargo often spent more time stalled at ports than in actual transit, effectively doubling overall shipping costs.

Compounding these economic burdens was widespread crime and corruption, particularly along the New York and New Jersey waterfronts. Mafia families, including the Genovese and Gambino syndicates, exerted significant control, with an estimated $13 million worth of cargo stolen from these ports over a three-year period, which is equivalent to roughly $180 million in today's currency.

In 1955, McLean decided to act on his vision, selling his successful 20-year-old trucking empire to invest everything into an ocean shipping company. This bold move signaled his commitment to transforming the industry.

He collaborated with 35-year-old engineer Keith Tantlinger to design standardized shipping containers and converted a World War II oil tanker, renaming it the SS Ideal X, to serve as a prototype for his experimental containerization system.
