Philippine Air Force Completes 32-Unit Black Hawk Acquisition, Fleet Reaches 47

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has officially completed its significant acquisition program for S-70i Black Hawk helicopters, with the recent delivery of seven new units. These helicopters were turned over to the PAF at Colonel Jesus Villamor Air Base, marking the fulfillment of a 32-unit order.

This final delivery brings the PAF's total Black Hawk fleet to 47 aircraft, solidifying one of the country's most substantial military helicopter acquisitions in recent years.

Colonel Ma. Christina Basco, spokesperson for the Philippine Air Force, underscored the strategic importance of this completed acquisition. She highlighted that the expansion of the rotary-wing fleet represents a crucial step in the ongoing modernization efforts of the PAF.

This enhancement specifically bolsters the PAF's capabilities in vital areas such as search and rescue operations and medical evacuation missions, enabling more effective humanitarian and defense efforts.

The contract for the 32 S-70i Black Hawk helicopters was formally signed on February 22, 2022, with PZL Mielec, a Polish aircraft manufacturer owned by Lockheed Martin. The agreement was valued at approximately 32 billion Philippine pesos.

Beyond the aircraft themselves, the contract also encompassed comprehensive logistics support, as well as essential training programs for both pilots and maintenance personnel, ensuring operational readiness.

The delivery of the 32 Black Hawk helicopters was carried out in a staggered manner over several years. The Philippine Air Force initially received the first 10 helicopters from the order in 2024.

Another 10 units entered the delivery process in 2025, followed by five more aircraft in January 2026. The final batch of seven helicopters arrived in mid-2026, with two transported by sea and the remaining five via an Antonov An-124 heavy transport aircraft.

The current total of 47 Black Hawk helicopters in the Philippine Air Force fleet includes a previous acquisition of 16 S-70i Blackhawks, which were delivered between 2020 and 2021. This earlier batch provided initial rotary-wing capabilities.

However, one aircraft from that original group was lost in June 2021 during a night-flying training mission. This incident reduced the operational count from the first acquisition.

Therefore, while the recent order completed the delivery of 32 additional aircraft, accounting for the loss of the single unit, the total operational fleet now stands at 47 instead of 48.
