Durukan noted that developers were initially surprised when a QA lead suggested that having 'too many tests' could be a problem, highlighting a common misconception that quantity equates to quality in automation.

The project extensively used UI tests to perform basic element verification, tasks more suited for lower levels of the test pyramid. Static checks belong at the component or unit level, not the system level, while end-to-end tests should primarily focus on validating critical user transaction flows. This misapplication created excessive load and unnecessary flakiness.

A key inefficiency was the repetition of login procedures for every single test case, unnecessarily lengthening execution times. By reusing session credentials and navigating directly to specific URLs instead of relying on UI interactions for state changes, significant time savings were achieved.

Merging preparation steps across related test cases significantly reduced repetitive code and execution time. However, this required careful judgment to avoid creating monolithic tests that become difficult to manage and debug. The goal was to find a 'sweet spot' in test design, where common setup is consolidated without sacrificing the clarity and maintainability of individual test cases.

The project improved execution speed by removing unnecessary layers in the test execution chain, such as external cloud services like BrowserStack, when not strictly necessary. A significant change involved transitioning from Selenium/WebDriverIO to Playwright. This move simplified the setup and often eliminated the need for cross-browser testing on every commit, further reducing execution time.

Over-abstraction in test scripts made troubleshooting failures extremely difficult, as the actual assertion logic became obscured. He advocated for explicit assertions within the test logic to enhance clarity and ease of debugging, even if it meant some duplication.

Over-abstraction and excessive conditional logic often lead to what are termed 'God functions'—single functions attempting to cover too many scenarios. These functions, overloaded with parameters and complex states, become black boxes that are nearly impossible to debug or modify. Adhering to the Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) is crucial to simplify test logic, making debugging and failure analysis much more straightforward.

Indiscriminate use of try-catch blocks can mask genuine product defects by allowing tests to 'pass' even when underlying functionality is broken. This creates a false sense of security and allows errors to go undetected. Exception handling should be implemented only with a valid, specific reason, ensuring that genuine failures are always reported and investigated.

A lack of clear visibility into test outcomes forced teams to manually comb through extensive logs to diagnose failures. Moreover, ephemeral environments often deleted critical diagnostic artifacts like screenshots and traces, making it difficult to debug recurring issues. Maintaining a comprehensive history of test executions and their artifacts is vital for efficient troubleshooting and understanding long-term trends.

Durukan developed an AI skill to automate test case definitions by connecting directly to issue tracking systems like Jira. This AI interprets requirements and acceptance criteria, generating test scenarios across component, integration, and system levels, adhering to predefined architectural guidelines and templates. This approach significantly streamlines the initial phase of test creation.

The team shifted from informal, offline test reviews (in TXT, Excel, or Teams) to a centralized process integrated with the code repository via pull requests. This change ensured that all review comments and discussions remained trackable long after code was merged. This standardized process, often assisted by AI-generated test definitions, improved accountability and knowledge retention.

Despite the benefits, Durukan stressed the importance of not blindly trusting AI, warning about the risk of hallucinations and the potential for inefficient code generation. Human oversight remains critical to review AI-generated content, manage costs, and ensure performance, preventing unintended errors or suboptimal solutions.

Test instability is primarily an engineering and process issue rather than solely a problem with specific tools. Simply switching from one test framework (e.g., Selenium) to another (e.g., Playwright) does not inherently solve flakiness. The reliability of an automation suite fundamentally depends on the implementation patterns and adherence to sound test design principles, rather than just the choice of technology.

Quality should be a shared responsibility across the entire development team, not solely resting with QA. Organizations rarely halt delivery to address technical debt, making it crucial for developers to actively participate in automation efforts. This collaborative approach prevents burnout for QA teams and avoids the accumulation of unmanageable technical debt.
