Philippines Vows to Fight China, Even Without Allies

The United States recently provided the Philippine military with four solar-powered maritime drones. These drones are intended to significantly enhance the Philippines' surveillance capabilities. The primary goal of this delivery is to improve the situational awareness of Philippine forces in disputed waters, allowing for better monitoring of maritime activities.

Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has stressed the importance of operationalizing security guarantees through joint training exercises, citing the Balikatan exercises as a prime example. He argued that security commitments must translate into practical actions, ensuring that military personnel, pilots, and sailors are well-versed in procedures before any emergency arises. Balikatan serves as a critical avenue for practical implementation of these alliances, moving beyond mere verbal assurances.

Teodoro highlighted that joint training with allied forces provides essential hands-on experience, even with systems the Philippines does not yet possess. This exposure is crucial for developing the skills and knowledge needed for future military acquisitions. He specifically mentioned the possibility of joint oil and gas exploration with China, indicating a desire to maintain economic ties. This approach aims to ensure that the Philippines does not negotiate from a position of helplessness, balancing diplomatic engagement with a strong defensive stance.
