Specialization Defines AI Data Center Architecture
Traditional data centers, typically planned with a 20 to 30-year horizon for generic hardware, are being superseded by specialized AI infrastructure.
Amin Vahdat, Google's VP of Systems and Services & AI Infrastructure, explained that AI data centers are often purpose-built, with buildings co-designed to meet the specific power and cooling demands of AI hardware.
The differing needs are stark: storage racks, for instance, require significantly less power and networking than the high-density compute racks used for AI.
This architectural shift minimizes inefficiency, moving away from overbuilding for fungibility, a practice common in earlier data center designs that is unsustainable in the AI era.
