A Scrap-Lumber Wall Organizer Built From a Junior High Woodshop Habit

David M opens by showing how he organizes his shop tools. He describes the setup as very convenient and very cheap, built from nothing more than scrap lumber and some nails. He presents it as an alternative to the drawer systems that people spend thousands of dollars on, which he calls silly.

The main advantage he points to is visibility. Because the tools stay on the wall in plain sight, he says anyone can see at a glance what is missing and where it goes.

David M says the system is not new to him. He learned it in junior high school shop class, where the teacher would not let students leave until all the tools were returned. He calls it a great system and says he uses it himself to stay organized.

Because every tool had a fixed place on the wall, the teacher could tell at once whether anything was still out. David M says the same logic applies in his own shop: if someone takes a tool, it is obvious what is missing and where it goes.

David M shows the wrench section, which holds his metric wrenches, SAE wrenches, nut drivers and screwdrivers. He then says the system is especially useful for sockets, since the sockets are all on the wall and marked.

He contrasts this with hunting through a drawer for the right socket. With the wall layout, he says, the square, nail pullers and other tools each have a visible place, so a missing item is easy to spot.

David M says the workshop also has some drawers, which he describes as pretty well organized. One drawer holds drill bits, another driver bits, another driver holders, and another sockets.

Other storage is grouped by use. He mentions clamps, sandpaper and measuring instruments, including a laser measure, curve follower and levels. Tapes and glues share one drawer, and oils have their own. Below the bench he keeps case tools, drill bits, impact driver sockets, battery storage, hand saws and all his screws. He sums it up by saying the shop is organized by function and that he is organized today and always will be.

David M acknowledges that the boards do not fit together perfectly. He explains that he has lived in four different houses and brought these boards with him each time, making modifications along the way.
