The US Geological Survey confirmed that the seismic signals detected were generated by the collapse itself, with the energy released being equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.

Researchers remain cautious about directly attributing any single event to climate change, but acknowledge its significant role in Himalayan instability. As temperatures rise in the Himalayas, glaciers are shrinking, and the high-altitude ice that once provided structural support to steep mountain faces can disappear. Changes in freeze-thaw cycles and altered rainfall patterns further exacerbate pressure on the stability of these mountains, increasing the danger of collapses.

The latest catastrophe illustrates how a single failure high on a mountain can rapidly trigger a chain of subsequent disasters. The sequence began with an ice and rock collapse, which then transformed into a destructive debris avalanche and subsequent flood. This accumulation of debris blocked river channels, leading to the formation of potentially dangerous new barrier lakes that pose further threats to downstream communities.

Officials are now considering engineering strategies to mitigate the risks posed by the barrier lake near Gyirong, using drones and 3D modeling for assessment. One primary strategy involves cutting a controlled drainage channel through a lower section of the debris barrier. This method aims to allow water to escape gradually, preventing a sudden, catastrophic failure of the natural dam.

Rescue teams are facing a difficult ethical and logistical dilemma in the unstable terrain: balancing the urgency of finding missing people against the safety of the rescuers.
