Mediapart: Over 300 Lawsuits, 5 Convictions

In 2007 and 2008, Mediapart was established by a team of journalists, including Edwy Plenel, François Bonnet, Laurent Mauduit, and Gérard Desportes, all of whom previously worked at Le Monde.

The platform pioneered a 100% digital, subscription-only model, foregoing traditional paper editions and relying entirely on reader funding rather than advertising.

Mediapart achieved significant financial growth, reporting 257,383 subscribers and 156 employees by the end of 2025.

Its turnover surpassed 28 million euros, marking a 12% increase since 2024, supported by a unique ownership structure transferred in 2019 to the 'Société pour la protection de l'indépendance de Médiapart' (SPIM), designed to prevent hostile takeovers and ensure editorial freedom by excluding advertising, public subsidies, and bank loans.

Mediapart gained prominence through several high-profile investigations, including the 2010 Bettencourt affair, where it published clandestine recordings from Liliane Bettencourt's home.

Other key exposes included the Sarkozy-Gaddafi affair (2011-2024) concerning alleged campaign financing, the 2012 Cahuzac affair revealing the undeclared Swiss bank account of then-budget minister Jérôme Cahuzac, and the 2016 Denis Baupin affair detailing sexual harassment and assault allegations against the Member of Parliament, with Nicolas Sarkozy later sentenced in 2024 to five years for criminal conspiracy related to these investigations.

Mediapart has frequently faced accusations of being an 'officine,' a term used by political figures such as François Fillon and Nicolas Sarkozy to imply that the outlet operates as a covert agency engaged in militant or biased journalism.

Edwy Plenel, a founder, publicly refuted these claims in 2019, asserting that Mediapart is fundamentally an information journal committed to its journalistic mission without allegiance to any political party.

Since its inception in 2008, Mediapart has navigated a landscape of approximately 340 legal procedures, yet has only accumulated five final criminal convictions, amounting to roughly 1.5% of all cases.

The organization allocates an annual budget of 250,000 euros for legal defense, with past convictions primarily stemming from procedural errors such as publication deadlines or response rights, notably with none of its major investigations into political figures resulting in a criminal conviction for the media itself.
