China Swarms Taiwan With 200 Ships, Escalating War Fears

This approach marks a shift from previous tactics that heavily relied on fighter jets. The objective is to change maritime conditions in the region without provoking an open conflict, by repeatedly establishing patrol patterns, gathering information, and maintaining a persistent presence.

Global Front Narrator states, "Beijing does not need to begin an open conflict to change conditions at sea. By repeatedly showing up, issuing instructions, gathering information, and establishing patrol patterns, Chinese government vessels can gradually create a presence that becomes harder to challenge."

In May, approximately 30 vessels were observed, a number that increased to 55 in June. By July, this figure surged to a record 244 vessels.

For the first 21 days of August, 152 vessels were detected, indicating a sustained high level of activity. Global Front Narrator highlighted, "Scientific research, and other government vessels in May, that rose to 55 in June before surging to a record 244 in July."

Taiwan's Coast Guard administration has reported an even broader count of Chinese government vessel activity, which includes several of Taiwan's outlying islands. From May through August 21st, this broader count reached 1,247 Chinese government vessels.

This figure contrasts with the monthly detections around the main island, which are presented separately. Global Front Narrator emphasized, "Taiwan's Coast Guard administration, says its broader count, which also covers several of Taiwan's outlying islands, reached 1247 Chinese government vessels from May through August 21st."

Sun Chen highlighted China's efforts to compel the shipping community to report to them, though these attempts have so far been unsuccessful.

Taiwan is urging international intervention to halt this behavior early, emphasizing that allowing such actions to continue could set a dangerous precedent for maritime control. Sun Chen stated, "They try to establish a model where that the shipping community feels the need to report to them and all of them fail because they are still far from it, but they're starting to try."

Beijing asserts that its Coast Guard patrols in the waters east of Taiwan are legitimate exercises of jurisdiction, claiming an exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in the area. These patrols are argued to be routine law enforcement activities.

For instance, a June 1st patrol was cited as a response to the activities of Japan and the Philippines in the region. Taipei, however, rejects the legitimacy of these patrols, viewing them as an infringement on its sovereign rights. Global Front Narrator mentioned, "Beijing argues that China has an exclusive economic zone and continental shelf east of Taiwan and says Chinese Coast Guard patrols there are legitimate exercises of jurisdiction."

Taiwanese authorities reported that the vessel deployed suspected scientific equipment into the water without proper authorization.

After initial warnings were ignored, Taiwanese Coast Guard vessels moved closer, maneuvered around the Tong G, and used searchlights and other measures to interfere with its operations. The vessel eventually recovered its equipment and departed the area. Global Front Narrator described, "Taiwanese authorities said the vessel lowered suspected scientific equipment into the water without authorization. After it ignored warnings, Taiwanese Coast Guard vessels moved closer, maneuvered around the ship, and used search lights and other measures to interfere with its activity."

The scientific data collected by civilian research vessels, such as measurements of water temperature, salinity, underwater acoustics, currents, and seabed geography, carries significant military implications. While valuable for legitimate oceanographic research, these same measurements can directly aid military planners.

Specifically, this data helps in understanding how submarines operate and how they might be detected, which is crucial for anti-submarine warfare, particularly in the deep waters east of Taiwan. Global Front Narrator explained, "Measurements of water temperature, salinity, underwater acoustics, currents, and seabed geography are valuable for legitimate oceanographic research. But those same measurements can also help military planners understand how submarines operate and how they might be detected."

This data collection effort is aimed at supporting anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

The broader goal is to deny the US and other allied vessels from conducting similar operations in these critical areas, effectively asserting control and gaining a tactical advantage. Jason Wang remarked, "China's objective was to gather fresh hydrographic data of the Ryukyu Trench and East Taiwan trench to conduct anti-submarine warfare and deny US and other allied vessels from doing the same."

China imposed traffic control measures during Typhoon Dolphin in August, which extended to the Taiwan Strait. This move was met with protest from Taipei, which argued that China lacked the legal authority to impose such controls over the strait.

This action reflects Beijing's ongoing efforts to act as the de facto maritime administrator in the region, subtly asserting its jurisdiction through ostensibly weather-related controls. The narrator noted, "Taipei protested, arguing that China had no authority to impose such controls over the Taiwan Strait."

These acts, such as patrolling or surveying, may appear minor when viewed in isolation.

However, cumulatively, these seemingly minor actions are designed to subtly shape the behaviors of both governments and commercial shipping in the disputed waters. The narrator stated, "The individual actions remain below the threshold of open warfare."

This legislative push is a significant step towards bolstering Taiwan's defense capabilities.

The act allocates a budget of 240 billion NT dollars over six years, with a specific focus on the development and deployment of various unmanned systems, including drones for air, land, underwater, and sea surface applications.

While the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) controls the presidency, the opposition party holds a majority in the legislature.

Disagreements persist over how quickly major defense programs should be funded, whether funds should come from special budgets or normal annual appropriations, and the extent of parliamentary oversight. US officials, including Representative Young Kim, have urged Taiwan to accelerate its defense actions. The narrator detailed, "The parties have disagreed over how quickly major defense programs should be funded, whether money should come from special budgets or normal annual appropriations, and how much parliamentary oversight procurement programs should receive."

If approved, this budget would represent a significant increase, amounting to 3.01% of Taiwan's GDP.

This record-breaking defense budget proposal is currently awaiting legislative approval, indicating Taiwan's strong commitment to strengthening its national security in the face of escalating regional tensions. The narrator reported, "President Lai's government has proposed 1.1225 trillion new Taiwan dollars in total defense related spending for 2027."

These potential contingencies include maritime quarantines, blockades, inspections of commercial shipping, cyber attacks, and pressure on ports.

The escalating presence of China's Coast Guard further contributes to these complex scenarios. The narrator concluded, "A future confrontation could begin with something more ambiguous: a maritime quarantine, a blockade, inspections of commercial shipping, cyber attacks, pressure on ports, or an expanding coast guard presence."
