Benjamin Guo shared his career background, detailing his experience at prominent tech companies before co-founding Zo Computer. He began his career with Venmo in 2013, where he met his co-founder, Rob. Subsequently, he moved to Stripe during its early stages. Rob, his co-founder, was notable as the first engineer at Substack, bringing significant experience to the Zo Computer team. Guo stated, "I started my career on the early Venmo team back in 2013 and um I met my co-founder Rob at Venmo and I left Venmo to work at Stripe quite early."

Guo discussed the design philosophy guiding Zo Computer, drawing inspiration from the Mac Finder icon. He explained that this iconic image, designed by Susan Kare, symbolizes the harmonious interaction between humans (the white face) and machines (the blue face). He noted that many people are unaware of this deeper meaning. The core goal of modern AI tools, according to Guo, should be to re-establish this sense of 'happy harmony' between users and technology. He elaborated, "this icon was designed by Susan Kare, an early graphic designer at Apple Computer and many people don't know the story behind this icon, but it actually represents the human, this white face, and the machine, this blue face, and they're kind of like in happy harmony."

Benjamin Guo criticized the current state of the internet, characterizing it as an overwhelming and fragmented experience for users. He described the digital landscape as a "sea of applications and sites and services," suggesting that this environment is detrimental to user experience. Furthermore, he pointed out that many companies are increasing prices for AI features that users may not have explicitly requested, adding to the frustration. Guo lamented, "Today, the internet and our computers feels more like this. We are swimming in the sea of applications and sites and services and it's not great."

Guo introduced the concept of 'techno-feudalism' to describe the hierarchical structure of the modern digital ecosystem. He explained that, similar to historical feudal systems, users act as 'peasants' who pay 'rent' to Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) providers. These SaaS providers, in turn, pay cloud providers, who then pay 'kings' such as Nvidia. Guo argued that platform incentives often prioritize monetization and data locking over the actual well-being and control of the user. He articulated, "It's what we call techno-feudalism. So, basically, feudalism was this like kind of shitty system back in the day, and though it no longer exists, it still is alive and well in our digital lives. So, we are still the peasants, we pay rent to the SaaS providers who pay rent to the cloud providers who pay rent to the kings."

Zo Computer aims to provide a "real home" on the internet, directly addressing the issue of data locking and the fragmented digital experience. Benjamin Guo emphasized that Zo is a personal cloud, a concept that he believes has been largely absent until now. He defined it simply: "You have your own home in the cloud. You're not using other cloud services. You have your own thing. You put your stuff in it. You put your AI in it."

To illustrate its practical application, Guo presented a case study of Charlotte, a private chef based in Los Angeles. Charlotte leverages Zo Computer for essential business functions such as invoicing, bookkeeping, and scheduling, demonstrating the platform's versatility for individual professionals.

Additionally, Zo incorporates a built-in browser, allowing for autonomous tasks such as online purchasing directly within the personal cloud environment.

Zo Computer offers robust hosting capabilities, allowing users to host arbitrary HTTP or TCP services, which provides significant flexibility for developers and businesses. The platform also enables the creation of personalized websites with live coding features, empowering users to dynamically manage their online presence. Benjamin Guo provided an example of a custom Calendly replacement he built on Zo, which uses AI to filter booking requests, stating, "And my Zo can like review the people that are interested. I don't want anybody like booking time with me directly."

Benjamin Guo articulated Zo Computer's broader vision for a future internet that fosters direct interaction and individual presence, moving away from reliance on intermediaries. He emphasized the goal of building an internet where "every individual has a real home, a presence on the internet." This future envisions direct engagement between people, companies, and AI agents, fundamentally shifting from interacting with traditional 'software 1.0' to more dynamic agent-based interactions. Guo explained, "The reason we're building Zo is to build a future and better internet, one that looks more like this where every individual has a real home, a presence on the internet."

Benjamin Guo critiqued current cloud-based AI models, including Claude.ai, OpenAI's assistants, and Perplexity, by labeling their operational dynamic as 'intelligence feudalism.' He argued that these systems primarily benefit the AI providers rather than the individual or company users. Guo illustrated this by pointing out that as users improve their AI setups, the primary beneficiary is the AI provider, not the user. He highlighted that the flow of value and intelligence tends to move upwards to the provider, leaving the user in the position of a 'peasant.' He stated, "And as you kind of improve your Claud tag setup, like what really improves is Anthropic, right? Like the the arrow is pointing the wrong way. And this is intelligence feudalism."

Benjamin Guo presented Zo Computer's alternative model, which champions user ownership and improvement of AI agents. He advocated for a system where both individuals and companies can publish and fully own their AI agents, ensuring that the benefits of usage accrue to the agent's owner. Guo envisions a future where the end usage of an agent directly contributes to its self-improvement for the publisher. He articulated, "Anybody, a company or an individual should be able to publish agents and own them and have end users and like have the end usage of their agent improve, like self-improve their own kind of published agent." In line with this vision, he announced an upcoming beta version of an agent publishing platform, signaling Zo's commitment to enabling agent ownership and continuous enhancement.
