John Schlit revealed that he pursued a civil engineering degree primarily to fulfill a promise he made to his father. Schlit stated, “It was a parental promise. I mean they they my parents were so great to me I I couldn't and all my father ever said get a degree that's all he asked and so um I kept that promise and uh he was an engineer. I thought he was a civil engineer. It turned out that he was a mechanical engineer.” This promise shaped his academic and early professional life.

But I'll tell you what, as the time goes on in that secular world, at least in mine. Uh I uh pretty much fell for the booze first and then uh came the cocaine. And it ended up ruling my life.”

His dependency began to control his life, causing significant strain on his family. The escalating issue ultimately became unsustainable, leading to his dismissal from the band, marking a critical turning point in his life.

In 1980, John Schlit reached a personal nadir, hitting rock bottom after missing his anniversary and confronting the full extent of his substance dependency. In a moment of profound despair, he contemplated suicide, believing his family would be better off without him. He recalled a voice telling him, “You know what, John? You're worth more dead than alive for you and your family.” This thought made complete sense to him at the time.

After a severe hangover, he sat in his living room, watching his children play, and began to seriously plan his suicide, thinking about “the best way to complete that mission.”

His wife's timely intervention, however, asking him to speak with her pastor, interrupted his plan and set him on a different path, marking the beginning of his journey toward recovery and transformation.

Following his personal struggles, John Schlit initially sought to distance himself from the music industry to avoid external pressures that contributed to his past dependencies. However, a family connection proved pivotal in his journey back to faith. Through his brother, he reconnected with Bob, a pivotal figure who facilitated Schlit's pivot toward Christian music. Schlit noted, “And so he started investigating and through my brother found me, asked my brother to call me to give him to give me his number. I called Bob and by this time I'm a major Petra fan.” This reconnection allowed him to channel his musical talents into an area that aligned with his renewed faith, offering a new direction for his career and personal life.
