Butler drew Oleg, a 23-year-old MMA fighter and football fan who joined the military with his friends, capturing a moment as Oleg was served borscht by his mother, Lisa, an English teacher from their town.

The portrait also unusually featured Oleg posing with his Kalashnikov alongside his guinea pig, Almond, a stark contrast that introduced a layer of ordinary humanity to his story amidst military gear.

Butler met Sergei, an architect whose home was destroyed by a Russian missile, in a hospital where he was recovering from head injuries, with windows taped to prevent shattering from explosions.

During a follow-up visit, Sergei, grinning from ear to ear, insisted on drawing Butler in return, demonstrating how art could bridge language barriers and foster mutual human connection even in a hospital setting.

Butler has extensively documented individuals in Syria, Tajikistan, Gaza, and Iraq, focusing on ordinary people who have faced terror and resisted with unwavering heart.
