Trump: South Korea to Invest $200B in US Energy

The substantial investment is focused on three major energy sectors: a 6-gigawatt power plant in Texas, eight new nuclear power plants, and the Alaska LNG pipeline project. President Trump emphasized that this deal represents a historic stride toward achieving American energy dominance and strengthening supply chain security.

Donald Trump indicated that this multi-billion dollar investment from South Korea is part of a broader trade agreement between the two nations, which includes a reduction of South Korean tariffs to 15%.

The former President asserted that projects of this magnitude would likely not be feasible without the financial framework established by this agreement. He also referenced similar financial commitments made by other nations, including Japan and European countries.

The comprehensive energy plan includes a significant $120 billion allocation for eight new nuclear reactors, with an additional $20 billion contingency. These reactors are slated for construction across key states including Ohio, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky, with the goal of solidifying the United States' position as a global leader in nuclear power production.

Another major component is the Alaska LNG project, valued at just over $50 billion, which aims to leverage Alaska's natural gas reserves. This project is expected to enhance the nation's energy export capabilities.

Rounding out the investment is a 6.5-gigawatt gas-fired power plant in Texas, with an estimated value exceeding $22 billion. This plant will contribute to the energy grid in the region, supporting both industrial and residential power needs.

Shipping LNG from Anchorage to Tokyo takes 8 days, a significant reduction from the 30-day transit required for Middle East supplies.

This project is designed to foster energy dependence on the United States for key allies in the region, including South Korea, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The pipeline itself is described as the largest energy infrastructure project undertaken in the US in the last 50 years, signaling its importance for both domestic energy security and international relations.

Following the finalization of financing, crews will begin work on the infrastructure, with completion expected within three years and local households likely to see lower energy costs shortly thereafter. Exports of LNG are projected to commence approximately two years after the pipeline's completion, establishing a total five-year window for full export capability.
