SpaceX Starship Flight 14 Delayed Amid Unexpected Testing

SpaceX is likely testing a crucial aspect of Starship landing by simulating a catch with its 'chopstick' landing rails and the ship's catching points. This procedure requires extreme precision during descent, a critical factor for the reusable rocket's future operations. The hypothetical test involves using a crane to lift Starship S42 to a low height, allowing the chopsticks to perform the final catch motion.

This raises questions about SpaceX's immediate goals before Flight 14 hardware arrives. Speculation centers on the possibility that SpaceX intends to conduct a catch test with S42, rather than focusing solely on orbital launch preparations.

This diversion could be attributed to severe weather conditions or a necessary resupply stop. Despite the temporary change in direction, the vessel is expected to continue its journey towards the Atlantic, utilizing the Agulhas current to aid its progress.

This contract will run through June 2030, with launches scheduled until 2032. The inclusion allows Relativity to directly compete for various government missions, including human spaceflight and other science agency endeavors.

NASA has already selected Relativity Space to launch the Marsbound Aeolis science mission, which is currently targeting a 2028 launch. The Terran R launch vehicle will be used for this mission. Relativity is also building the spacecraft for this mission, which will focus on environmental studies of Mars.

Following the Terran 1's failure to reach orbit in March 2023, Relativity Space has abandoned its smaller vehicle to focus on the larger, reusable Terran R architecture. This new rocket is designed for reusability, marking a more ambitious entry into the launch market. The company has expanded its facilities at Cape Canaveral, with the debut of Terran R now likely shifted to 2027.
