Pope's Visit Boosts Tourism, Economic Impact Debated

With more than 9 out of 10 rooms booked for the Sunday-Monday period, the papal visit sparked a surge in reservations for Metz hotels, according to initial indicators.

This surge in demand extended beyond Metz, benefiting nearby cities like Sarbourg as visitors sought lodging, and some local establishments reportedly doubled or even quadrupled their prices. Metz officials, as reported, viewed the event as valuable long-term international advertising for the city.

Nearby towns such as Tarbes and Pau also benefited from the influx, as visitors extended their stays to explore the broader Pyrenees region.

In Paris, hotel occupancy increased by 4% and prices rose by 30% compared to last year, according to MKG data.

However, the Pope's specific effect is difficult to isolate due to the simultaneous occurrence of other major events, including a Celine Dion concert and the start of Fashion Week.

Government estimates indicated that 1.3 million people attended the events, but many were day-trippers who did not require hotel accommodations in the city.

The Minister of Economy compared the papal visit's economic impact to Celine Dion's concerts, which were estimated to generate nearly one billion euros.

However, the government acknowledged that no consolidated data currently exists to verify these figures, and the economic impact of pilgrimages typically differs from concerts due to shorter stays and lower average spending per visitor.

The organization budget for the papal visit, announced by the Church, totaled 27 million euros, funded primarily through donations and patronage.

The government maintained that this was not a 'State visit,' with Metz allocating an additional 500,000 euros for local infrastructure, such as giant screens, to support the event.

Administrative courts rejected a legal challenge based on secularism, citing the international reach and significance of the event as justification for the state's involvement in security costs.
