Berman says local AI doesn't make sense for most people yet
Berman opens with a blunt position: local AI makes no sense to him right now. He argues that telling the average person to cancel a ChatGPT subscription in favor of running AI locally would be a mistake, because local AI is expensive, hard to set up, and not as good as the frontier models.
He adds that he is not speaking as someone who lacks the means. He says he reaches for ChatGPT or Claude when he needs to get real work done, even though he is technical and has substantial computing resources. He also criticizes much of the local-AI discussion for focusing on which setups people have running rather than what they actually accomplished with them.
