Starship Achieves First Orbital Flight

Following a motor failure during the ascent, the Starship mission was cut short, though the vehicle still managed to deploy 26 operational Starlink V3 satellites after reaching orbit.

Christophe Danette confirmed the deployment of 26 Starlink V3 satellites, which are already operational, despite the mission being cut short after a motor failure during ascent. The flight lasted only 3 hours instead of the planned 10 hours and completed two orbits instead of six, re-entering the atmosphere and splashing down in the Pacific where it exploded, though recovery was not intended.

The Starship, including its Super Heavy booster, stands an impressive 124 meters tall, equivalent to a 40-story building.

It is engineered to carry up to 60 satellites and over 100 tons into orbit, with a target cost of under 10 million dollars per flight, making it 10 times cheaper than Ariane, though this economic viability hinges on mastering rapid recovery and reuse of both stages.

The company's strategy involves expanding its Starlink internet constellation, with the ultimate goal of providing global internet coverage for the planet's 9 billion inhabitants.

Starlink currently serves over 12 million subscribers, and SpaceX has invested more than 15 billion dollars into Starship's development, although the project is significantly behind Elon Musk's initial target of 2022 for the first orbital flight.
