Blake Mycoskie recalled his earlier years living on a 45-foot sailboat in Marina del Rey, describing them as some of the happiest years of his life.

During this period, he owned minimal possessions, including only a few bags of clothes, a bike, a surfboard, and a laptop, finding contentment in this simple existence.

Despite building TOMS into a global brand that distributed over 100 million shoes to children in need through its one-for-one model, Mycoskie experienced profound personal despair.

Just 23 months ago, he became so lost, hopeless, and depressed that he developed a plan to end his life, choosing to return to his boat to spare his family the trauma of finding him.

Mycoskie ultimately chose not to act on his suicidal plan, instead confiding in his friends and family about his true mental state, a decision he credits with saving his life.

He then engaged in a five-month process with a psychiatrist to understand the root causes of his distress and to discontinue four medications that had been prescribed following a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Mycoskie realized his constant pursuit of success was an attempt to quiet an inner voice that insisted he was inadequate.

This inner voice, present since childhood, was paradoxically amplified by his achievements, leading him to view his life as a strategy to earn his worth that eventually failed him.

Mycoskie's therapist prescribed a rigorous 40-day practice, requiring him to repeat the mantra 'I am enough. I've always been enough' for 20 minutes each morning and evening with his eyes closed.

For the initial three weeks, he found the exercise trivial and unproductive, questioning its efficacy.

However, on the 28th day, he experienced a profound shift, marked by a physical sensation of peace and a cognitive realization that validated the mantra's power.

Mycoskie pointed out that society treats mental health issues as shocking failures or secrets, in stark contrast to physical illnesses like colds or broken bones, which are openly discussed and anticipated.

He emphasized that this silence around mental health is deadly, explaining that his own near-suicidal struggle stemmed from shame rather than a lack of strength.

Mycoskie conducted a live poll, where approximately 40% of the audience raised their hands for having a broken bone, but significantly fewer responded when asked about a mental health diagnosis.

He highlighted the US Department of Health's estimate that 50% of people will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime, arguing that expecting mental illness could lead to earlier help-seeking and lower suicide rates.

A direct correlation exists between the lack of open communication and elevated suicidal ideation, a cycle Mycoskie identified through his own history of shame, isolation, and eventual silence.

Research supports this, indicating that open communication with even one person can significantly reduce suicide risk.
