DIY Insulated Crawl Space Door Reduces Drafts

Concerns arose regarding potential pest entry, specifically mice, through these existing gaps, and the existing spray foam insulation on the old door was only 3/4 inch, deemed insufficient for proper thermal sealing.

The new crawl space door was constructed from a 1/2-inch cement fiber backer board, chosen for its durability and resistance.

The door's main structure is reinforced with a 2x4 frame, and it is insulated with 1.5-inch foil-faced rigid foam, bolted to the backer board to enhance thermal performance.

Angle iron brackets, secured with Tapcon concrete screws, provide the mounting points for these clamps, allowing the user to screw them tighter to achieve an optimal airtight compression.

The backer board received two coats of primer followed by two coats of acrylic paint for weather resistance and a finished appearance.

Installation into the concrete or brick foundation required a special carbide-tipped drill bit, and all hardware, including bolts and screws, is made of stainless steel to prevent corrosion.

The door's core material is 1/2-inch cement backer board, specifically a heavy product designed for shower stalls, which provides a robust and stable base.

Rigid foam insulation, featuring foil facing on both sides to serve as a radiant heat barrier, was bolted to the backer board, with the bolts trimmed using an angle grinder to ensure a flush finish.

The door frame is mounted using angle iron, which was primed and painted for enhanced corrosion resistance.

Tapcon screws were used to drill into the brick foundation, requiring 3/8-inch holes drilled with a specialized carbide-tip drill bit, while stainless steel Allen bolts and screws were chosen for all fasteners to prevent rusting in the damp crawl space environment.

Adjustable stainless steel toggle clamps are strategically placed on both sides of the door, allowing for precise tightening to increase pressure on the rubber gasket seal.

This rubber seal is critical for creating an airtight barrier, specifically designed to keep out pests like mice, with the option to replace it with stainless mesh if rodents prove to be an issue.
