Bank of England Holds Interest Rates at 3.75%
Inflation currently stands at 3.1%, exceeding the target of 2%. Markets have suggested the possibility of five interest rate hikes over the next 12 months, reflecting the ongoing pressure to bring inflation under control.
The Bank of England faces a difficult dilemma, needing to curb inflation while simultaneously fostering economic growth. This balancing act is central to its mandate to target inflation, despite the broader economic landscape.
Tom Harwood noted the inherent conflict in this strategy, stating, "inflation is rising but also there isn't as high growth as we would like and and the way that you squeeze out inflation is by you know making people have less money. Uh and that's not good for economic growth."
