"Path to Zero" Film Exposes Kabul Chaos

The Afghanistan withdrawal demonstrated a significant inability to conduct military operations effectively, sending a clear signal of weakness around the world. This event is widely viewed as a primary catalyst for subsequent foreign policy disasters. According to Steve Bannon, the withdrawal emboldened adversaries such as China, Iran, Russia, and Gaza.

Securing realistic archival footage was essential to convey the intense emotional impact experienced by individuals at Kabul Airport during the evacuation. Filmmaker Michael Pack emphasized the importance of building trust with interviewees as a prerequisite for sensitive storytelling on such a critical topic.

Moral injury is distinct from traditional PTSD, occurring when individuals are involved in actions or inactions that directly contradict their personal moral codes or values. This phenomenon was a key and unexpected discovery during the film's production, highlighting a unique psychological burden. Young Marines at Kabul Airport were reportedly forced to perform duties that created significant moral conflict, leading them to experience this specific type of trauma. The film advocates for greater attention and support for these veterans, whose experiences differ from those with conventional combat-related PTSD.

This phenomenon, known as moral injury, is a critical issue that should ideally be prevented. Michael Pack asserts that moral injury is not something that U.S. Marines or any other service members should ever have to experience.

Initial directives from the State Department mandated that only individuals with U.S. passports or special immigrant visas could be allowed entry, explicitly excluding their families. This order forced Marines to make agonizing decisions, turning away women and children at the gates, effectively sending them back to face the Taliban. Compounding the trauma, this order was reversed just one day later, leaving 18-20 year-old personnel grappling with the devastating consequences of their enforced actions. The rapid shift in policy contributed significantly to the moral injury experienced by these young service members.

This institutional silence stems from a desire to avoid reminding the public of distressing events like those at Kabul. Consequently, young Marines who were forced to escort women and children to gates where they faced harm from the Taliban do not receive adequate help or acknowledgment from the military, exacerbating their ongoing struggle to process their actions.

The film traces the crisis back to President Joe Biden's decision in April 2021 to completely withdraw all troops, an order that initiated the 'path to zero.' This decision was compounded by a failure to adequately support Afghan forces and a belated announcement of the evacuation, ultimately creating the impossible task of evacuating 124,000 people in just two weeks.
