Coral Snake Venom: A Slow, Painless Path to Paralysis
Coral snake venom, despite its lethal outcome, is characterized by its speed of delivery and an initial lack of pain, making the bite almost imperceptible at first.
Symptoms typically appear approximately 12 hours after the bite, beginning with facial paralysis that progresses to difficulty swallowing and speaking.
The paralysis then spreads downwards to the limbs, eventually affecting the chest muscles and inhibiting breathing, leading to suffocation while the victim remains fully conscious until just before cardiac arrest. Despite the gruesome outcome, many victims survive if they receive medical treatment in time.
