James previously spent four years at Caterpillar developing autonomous bulldozers and excavators, an experience that revealed a significant void in construction automation.

He discovered that many crucial construction tasks rely purely on manual labor, with no existing automated equipment, thereby creating a bottleneck for deploying essential infrastructure like energy facilities and data centers, especially amidst current U.S. labor shortages.

Prior to its current development batch, Cosmic Robotics deployed three distinct systems in the field, which successfully installed 11,000 solar panels on some of the largest projects globally.

The company has developed a new production version of its robot and recently secured a significant contract with the largest construction company in the United States, marking a major commercial milestone.

Cosmic Robotics plans to initially deploy a fleet of tens of thousands of robots on Earth to generate substantial revenue and collect data.

This Earth-based profit engine will then fund the company's broader ambition of extraterrestrial construction, aligning with SpaceX's vision of producing 1,000 Starships annually for space exploration.

James advises founders in hardware and construction startups to deeply embed themselves with their customers, emphasizing that the construction industry is fundamentally relationship-based.

He illustrates this by explaining how Cosmic Robotics personnel live with customers for months at a time on sites like a 2,000-acre solar farm in remote South Texas, fostering trust and a profound understanding of customer needs.
