Local Agentic AI Enhances Mobile Game Accessibility

AI is not currently employed for generating the core content of these puzzles in their product games. Instead, the focus of AI integration, as presented, revolves around experimental and exploratory applications.

Shafik Quoraishee clarified that his current presentation on agentic game theory differs significantly from his previous work presented at the 2025 AI Engineer World Fair. The earlier talk focused on using Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to build solvers for games like Connections, addressing semantic ambiguity in game challenges. The current discussion, however, expands into the broader scope of local agentic theory, moving beyond GNNs for semantic game solvers.

Pac-Man serves as a foundational example of early AI implementation in gaming, utilizing a system known as finite state machines. This well-known, yet simplistic, conditional AI adjusts character states based on in-game conditions. For instance, the ghosts' behavior dynamically shifts between chasing and avoidance modes depending on the current game state, illustrating one of the first named AI-based systems in gaming.

This local processing also enhances user privacy, as sensitive data remains on the device, rather than being transmitted externally. Furthermore, on-device AI enables full offline play, removing the need for a constant network connection and supporting more effective localized personalization directly on the user’s device.

RL models learn through extensive trial and error within a defined environment. In contrast, agentic models leverage language and vision to interpret information and execute tasks, representing a distinct architectural approach to decision-making.

Agentic AI operates differently from traditional models, primarily utilizing language and vision models as a central 'brain' for executing actions based on an understanding of its information space. This system focuses on task-based execution, where actions are performed through explicit tool calls rather than learning from a world model. The agentic loop involves a constant evaluation cycle to ensure progress toward achieving its goals.

To implement an agentic system in Space Invaders, the game required a breakdown into several distinct tasks. The agent performs specific functions such as evading enemy fire, shooting, and moving the ship left or right based on bullet trajectories. This command-based AI architecture offers an alternative to approaches like Deep Q Networks, allowing for modular and explicit task execution.

The limited RAM budget on mobile devices restricts the parameter size of AI models, making state history compression critical for efficient memory management. Maintaining a frame budget of 16 milliseconds is also essential to prevent 'jank' or noticeable performance drops, ensuring a smooth user experience. The Google Seema framework is cited as a representative example of this approach, where agents possess a general understanding that allows them to adapt to diverse environments rather than being pre-programmed for specific ones.

Agentic systems can significantly enhance accessibility testing by interacting with devices to not only perform automated tests but also emergently find issues that static testing might miss. For instance, these agents can identify 'focus traps' where UI elements, like dialogue boxes, might cause selection to get stuck in the background, preventing user interaction. This represents a crucial shift from static accessibility testing to more dynamic and responsive emergent testing methods.

AI can be utilized to create fabricated websites or applications that intentionally incorporate accessibility flaws, adhering to guidelines like WCAG 2.2. Developers can then build suites of tests designed to capture these specific violations within the artificial environment. This method allows for isolated module testing within existing systems, providing a targeted approach to verify compliance through agent interaction with the device UI.

Agents serve a dual function in game development: acting as automated testers for integration checks and monitoring focus order, while also providing natural language feedback on subjective metrics such as difficulty. This enables real-time adjustments to gameplay balancing based on agent analysis. Furthermore, agents can test character progression and dialogue clarity, ensuring logical flow and player understanding.

Running inference on every frame for UX testing is computationally costly for both local and remote models. Dynamic user experiences necessitate vision-based monitoring to effectively detect standard accessibility violations. Developers should consider a hybrid approach, combining screenshots with game state changes to balance thoroughness with performance. Ultimately, a completionist testing strategy often requires vision-based agentic systems to ensure comprehensive coverage.
