Animating an Action Scene in Under 10 Minutes

Drawing the keyframes for the panther proved particularly difficult.

Notes were meticulously kept to track the glowing eye effects, which were crucial for the later compositing phase to ensure visual consistency and impact.

For close-up dialogue, the third cut employs four distinct drawings to represent various mouth shapes, enhancing the expressiveness of the character. The jaw's movement is synchronized precisely with the mouth, contributing to a more realistic visual effect during close-up shots.

This intricate timing is strictly based on the voice-over audio provided by the voice actor for MrBeast.

The most challenging shot in the animation involved a camera circling the character, demanding precise coordination of character and camera movements. To manage this complexity, the character performs a three-action looping sequence: starting with a hammer shot, followed by a counter-attack, and concluding with a bite.

This entire scene is animated on threes, a technique used to save time and resources given the high density of action occurring within the shot. Secondary elements, such as flying characters and smoke effects, were organized into separate folders to facilitate a clean export process.

The background environment was constructed using a three-layer system, complemented by a distinct foreground element to create depth. These elements are animated to move at varying speeds, effectively simulating the parallax effect.

This parallax technique is employed to mimic the human field of vision, where objects closer to the viewer appear to move faster than those further away.

Keyframe drawings were handed off to another person for the labor-intensive cleanup and coloring processes, optimizing the production timeline. This strategic decision to outsource these tasks allows the creator to initiate cleanup work on completed cuts while simultaneously progressing with the remaining animation.

By delegating these stages, the overall animation workflow is significantly streamlined, ensuring continuous progress across different production phases.

The final compositing stage was executed following a tutorial by Dong Chang, ensuring a structured approach to post-production. The workflow in After Effects included importing exported cell animations, applying necessary color changes, smoothing lines for a polished look, and adding soft light to each cell to enhance visual depth.

Backgrounds for the scenes were skillfully painted by a hired artist. The concluding steps involved meticulously adding shadows, highlights, and a signature anime filter to achieve the desired aesthetic and visual quality.
