Ukraine Launches Large-Scale Drone Attack on Moscow

Ukraine launched its largest drone attack on Moscow since the start of the war. The attack struck several buildings and a logistics warehouse in Moscow, interpreted as an attempt to paralyze Russia's economic system.

This drone attack, escalating to directly threaten the Russian mainland, indicates a gradual shift in the nature of the war.

The Russian Ministry of Defense officially announced that over 800 drones were shot down in the attack. However, the actual number of drones deployed by Ukraine is estimated to be between 1,500 and over 2,000.

The drone attacks were concentrated on major logistics facilities in and around Moscow, causing widespread damage.

The Koledino logistics warehouse of 'Wildberries,' Russia's largest online retailer, suffered severe damage in the drone attack. Photos shared on social media highlighted the extent of the damage.

This suggests that Ukraine targeted e-commerce logistics facilities in retaliation for Russia's use of civilian logistics networks for military purposes.

Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Ukraine in retaliation for the Moscow drone attack, resulting in over 7 deaths. Internally, Ukraine has raised the possibility that Russia used North Korean ballistic missiles.

This further fuels suspicions that Russia is attempting to overcome its weapon shortages due to Western sanctions through cooperation with North Korea.

The recent pattern of attacks, with intensified strikes on the home front rather than frontline engagements, is transforming into a World War II-style strategic bombing, causing civilian casualties. This puts political pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and damages the civilian economy.

Such a change heightens concerns about the use of tactical nuclear weapons and suggests the war could unfold in unexpected ways.

With restrictions on U.S. long-range missile support, Ukraine has independently developed its own long-range cruise missile, 'Flamingo.' Developed by Firepoint, this missile uses proprietary technology and engines.

With a range of 3,000 km and a 1,000 kg warhead, it is considered as powerful as the U.S. Tomahawk or South Korea's Hyunmoo-3 missiles.

Ukraine is moving away from its previous reliance on U.S. and European weapons by embarking on full-scale indigenous weapon production. This allows it to overcome restrictions on the frequency of strikes against Russia.

In particular, it is accelerating the strengthening of its independent defense capabilities by also pursuing the development of a new ballistic missile, the 'FP9'.

Although Firepoint claims it will mass-produce 100 'Flamingo' missiles per month, some point out that this figure may be somewhat exaggerated. The biggest obstacle is engine procurement; currently, engines are being salvaged from dismantled existing aircraft.

Nevertheless, through these self-production efforts, Ukraine is expanding its ability to strike the Russian mainland.

As the threat of Ukrainian strikes on the mainland grows, Russia has consecutively canceled or scaled down major military-related events scheduled in Moscow. Notably, the Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival, usually held grandly every year, has been postponed.

This can be interpreted as evidence that Ukraine's drone attacks are not only shaking the Putin regime's display of military power but also its confidence in defending the capital.

Turkey is pursuing a plan to sell and transfer all 12 of its U.S.-made M270 launchers, 70 ATACMS missiles, and a large quantity of cluster munitions to Ukraine. This appears to be part of a complex political and military deal between the U.S., Turkey, and Ukraine.

Turkey is understood to be using this support to counter Iran and to return to a NATO-centric strategy.

Ukrainian intelligence authorities officially confirmed the presence of Samsung Electronics memory chips in Russian drones. This raises the possibility of indirect exports through third countries and suggests that South Korean components are being used in Russia's advanced weapon manufacturing. It can also be interpreted to mean that Russia's production of advanced weapons would be difficult without South Korean semiconductor technology.

This discovery shows that South Korea faces a new challenge in blocking routes that bypass sanctions on Russia. At the same time, it serves as an opportunity to reconfirm the influence of South Korea's advanced semiconductor technology on the global security environment.

Government authorities must strengthen efforts to identify and block such indirect export routes. Furthermore, measures should be explored to encourage domestic companies to exercise greater caution in managing exports of dual-use items.

Analysis suggests that former U.S. President Donald Trump's mention of reducing U.S.-ROK joint exercises was a political statement, considering the U.S.'s Iran issues and the North Korean denuclearization negotiations at the time. This can be seen as a strategic rhetoric to blame South Korea for the reduction of exercises, thus avoiding criticism from anti-dialogue forces within the U.S. regarding North Korea.

Trump's remarks are interpreted as a deceptive tactic to fault South Korea for its lack of response, with complex intentions related to the U.S. domestic political situation.

The South Korean government stated that it has participated in international discussions for a ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. and the restoration of free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The potential deployment of the Cheonghae Unit to Iranian waters was also discussed.

This suggests that South Korea responded to U.S. pressure for military support and sought practical defense strategies through close cooperation with the U.S.

North Korea responded to former President Trump's offer of dialogue with Deputy Director Kim Yo-jong stating it was 'the first time she heard such a thing,' denying any contact. This is interpreted as a highly calculated political move to preserve their prestige before negotiations and enhance their bargaining power, considering political opposition within the U.S.

Through this 'low-key' strategy, North Korea shows a lack of eagerness for dialogue while leaving room for participation in negotiations when necessary, displaying a dual stance.

The latter half of the Ulchi Freedom Shield joint exercise scenario, which included counterattack operations against North Korea and territorial recovery drills, was omitted. This is interpreted as an intention to secure strategic flexibility by focusing on defensive drills against North Korean provocations, while also encouraging sincere dialogue from North Korea.

While this reduction in drills aligns with former President Trump's political gains, it is also regrettable from South Korea's perspective, as it reduces leverage against North Korea.

In response to rising tensions in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has placed additional orders for South Korea's Cheongung-II missiles and U.S.-made THAAD launchers to secure air defense assets. This is part of an effort to acquire a large number of missiles amidst a global shortage of air defense missile inventories.

Despite the THAAD contract with Lockheed Martin, the delivery timeline remains uncertain due to surging global demand.

South Korea's Cheongung-II missile boasts a high interception success rate of 96%, but this also presents a double-edged sword: inventory shortages. As demand for air defense systems from Middle Eastern countries like the UAE surges, South Korea's production capacity is struggling to keep up.

Efforts are currently needed to increase production within three years. If this production capacity expansion does not occur, exports may be limited despite the high success rate.

Prolonged delays in the supply of U.S.-made Patriot missiles and THAAD systems are signaling a shift in the global air defense weapon market. Although the U.S. plans to triple Patriot production, the timeline for this remains uncertain.

In this situation, LIG Nex1's Cheongung missile is expected to exceed 500 billion won in sales this year, presenting an opportunity for South Korean weapons to increase their market share in the air defense sector, which was once dominated by U.S. weapons.
