China-Philippines Coast Guard Collision in Disputed Waters

A collision between a Chinese Coast Guard vessel and a Philippine government ship took place on September 18, 2026. The incident involved the Philippine vessel BRP Datu Magat Salamat and the China Coast Guard vessel CCG 21585.

This event marks another escalation in the ongoing regional maritime tensions between the two nations.

The Philippine Coast Guard stated that the Filipino vessel was conducting a maritime patrol and delivering fuel assistance to Filipino fishermen operating west of Palawan when the confrontation occurred. The incident took place 54 nautical miles from the coast, within the Philippines' 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

No injuries were reported, but the vessel sustained significant damage to its starboard railings and equipment.

Rear Admiral J. Tariela detailed the sequence of events, stating that CCG 21585 first crossed behind the BRP Datu Magat Salamat at an extremely close range. This passage, at a distance of 10 meters, was reported at 11:04 a.m.

The collision itself occurred at 11:13 a.m. while the Philippine ship maintained its course, according to Tariela.

Rear Admiral Jay Tariela characterized the mission as a humanitarian livelihood operation, emphasizing that the vessel was not involved in military activity. The Philippines views the China Coast Guard's actions as a deliberate ramming of a civilian government vessel.

Manila's official stance is that these actions endangered the lives of the Filipino crew members.

China Coast Guard spokesperson Gan Yu claimed the Philippine vessel violated previous warnings, asserting that the Philippine ship accelerated across the bow of their vessel. Beijing maintains that its actions during the incident were professional and lawful.

Gan Yu issued a stern warning to the Philippine side to immediately cease all acts of infringement and provocation, cautioning them to bear all consequences.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian echoed the Coast Guard's accusations, demanding that the Philippines immediately cease its infringement activities at sea and stop spreading false narratives and disinformation. China reaffirmed its commitment to defending its territorial sovereignty in the South China Sea.

Beijing views the area as integral to its maritime rights and interests.
