SpaceX Eyes Heavy-Lift Vessel Forte for Starship S40 Recovery

SpaceX has confirmed that a team of engineers is currently en route to Christmas Island to begin the next phase of the Starship S40 recovery mission. Their primary objective is to conduct additional analysis on the vehicle in calmer waters.

This assessment is crucial before any attempts are made to return the Starship prototype to Starbase.

The semi-submersible heavy-lift vessel Forte has been identified as the leading candidate for the recovery of Starship S40. Forte recently departed from Batam, Indonesia, on the 20th of the month, setting a course for Christmas Island.

Traveling at a speed of 13 knots, the vessel is capable of covering approximately 300 nautical miles per day, making it a viable option for the long-distance recovery.

The Forte vessel boasts substantial technical specifications, including a cargo deck approximately 177.6 meters long and 43 meters wide. Its impressive carrying capacity ranges from 48,000 to 50,000 tons.

These dimensions and capacities make it well-suited for transporting a large vehicle like Starship S40.

The Forte's semi-submersible design offers a significant advantage by allowing it to partially submerge its cargo deck 13 meters below the waterline, with a total submerged draft reaching 26 meters. This unique capability enables the vessel to load cargo without the need for large port cranes, a critical factor given the remote location and lack of infrastructure at the recovery site.

Once S40 is secured, there are two major route options for its return to Starbase: eastward across the Pacific Ocean or westward across the Indian Ocean and into the Atlantic. Pacific routes could involve traversing the Panama Canal or landing at a West Coast port for overland transport, while Indian Ocean routes might utilize the Cape of Good Hope or the Suez Canal.

At an estimated speed of 11-12 knots, the journey is projected to take approximately a month and a half.
