SpaceX Eyes Heavy-Lift Vessel Forte for Starship S40 Recovery

Their primary objective is to conduct additional analysis on the vehicle in calmer waters.

This assessment is crucial before any attempts are made to return the Starship prototype to Starbase.

Forte recently departed from Batam, Indonesia, on the 20th of the month, setting a course for Christmas Island.

Traveling at a speed of 13 knots, the vessel is capable of covering approximately 300 nautical miles per day, making it a viable option for the long-distance recovery.

Its impressive carrying capacity ranges from 48,000 to 50,000 tons.

These dimensions and capacities make it well-suited for transporting a large vehicle like Starship S40.

The Forte's semi-submersible design offers a significant advantage by allowing it to partially submerge its cargo deck 13 meters below the waterline, with a total submerged draft reaching 26 meters. This unique capability enables the vessel to load cargo without the need for large port cranes, a critical factor given the remote location and lack of infrastructure at the recovery site.

This design effectively solves the logistical challenges associated with recovering a massive object like Starship S40 in open water.

The vessel would approach S40, then partially submerge itself, allowing its cargo deck to sink below the Starship.

Forte would then move underneath and around S40, positioning its cargo deck so that the ship sits directly above it. As Forte subsequently rises, S40 would settle onto the vessel's deck, securing it for transport.

Pacific routes could involve traversing the Panama Canal or landing at a West Coast port for overland transport, while Indian Ocean routes might utilize the Cape of Good Hope or the Suez Canal.

At an estimated speed of 11-12 knots, the journey is projected to take approximately a month and a half.

Each route presents unique logistical considerations, including canal transit fees, potential weather delays, and the availability of suitable ports for any necessary transfers.

Given S40's unprecedented 24-day survival at sea, prioritizing a long, uninterrupted journey home might be the most prudent approach.

This strategy minimizes additional risks and logistical hurdles after the vehicle has already endured significant oceanic exposure.

The latest updates indicate that Flight 14 will likely not attempt to catch the ship with the Mechazilla tower. This decision suggests that SpaceX aims to further validate both the vehicle's performance and the catching system itself before attempting a complex catch operation.

Elon Musk has expressed expectations for the first ship re-flight to occur either later this year or early next year, indicating a methodical approach to Starship's development and operationalization.

A successful precision return would demonstrate Starship's ability to accurately return to the Starbase area, allowing for rapid recovery within hours or a day of landing.

Such an achievement could even see S41 returning to Starbase before S40, providing quicker turnaround data and accelerating the test campaign.

This timing could make a mid-October launch for Flight 15 difficult, potentially impacting SpaceX's flight cadence. It is also possible that S40's successful return and recovery may precede the first successful ship catch by the Mechazilla tower.

This unprecedented survival offers SpaceX engineers a critical opportunity to study the effects of prolonged saltwater exposure and dynamic ocean conditions on the vehicle's structure and systems.

Engineers are conducting detailed inspections of the vessel in calmer waters to gather invaluable data. This information will be instrumental in informing design improvements and material selections for future Starship flights, enhancing the vehicle's resilience and longevity in various environments.

The chosen solution, utilizing the heavy-lift vessel Forte, is essential for long-distance transport due to the sheer size of the spacecraft.

The limited infrastructure at the remote recovery site further necessitates reliance on specialized vessels like Forte, capable of independent loading and transport operations.

The current situation with S40 highlights the challenges of allowing a vehicle to splash down thousands of kilometers away and then deploying recovery vessels.

Instead, SpaceX aims for Starship to return directly to Starbase, be caught, lowered, inspected, and prepared for its next mission with minimal delay, mirroring the efficiency of Falcon 9 booster recovery. This vision also includes future potential for offshore launch and recovery platforms, further streamlining operations and reducing turnaround times for a truly reusable space transport system.
