China Coast Guard Collides With Philippine Ship

So, a maritime confrontation in the West Philippine Sea has once again drawn international attention after a China Coast Guard vessel collided with a Philippine government fishery ship during a mission intended to provide fuel assistance to Filipino fishermen.

The incident took place on Friday, September 18th, 2026, roughly 54 nautical miles off the coast of Paloan. The Philippine vessel involved was the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources ship BRP2 Maggot Salamont, also known as MMO 315. The Chinese

vessel involved was China Coast Guard ship CCG 21585. According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the BRP Datu Maggot Salomat had been conducting a maritime patrol and fuel subsidy operation for Filipino fishermen working in the West Philippine Sea. Philippine authorities said the

encounter occurred around 6.36 nautical miles northn northwest of Abad Santos Shaw internationally known as Bombay Shaw and approximately 54 nautical miles

location lies well within the Philippines exclusive economic zone. Philippine officials also released a detailed account of the moments leading up to the collision. At around 11:04 in the morning, the Philippine Coast Guard said CCG 21585 crossed behind the BAR

vessel, passing its stern at a distance of only about 10 m. Despite the extremely close maneuver, the Philippine vessel continued along its course. Around 9 minutes later, at approximately 11:13 a.m., Philippine authorities said the Chinese Coast Guard vessel carried

out another close maneuver. This time, the two ships made physical contact. Rear Admiral J. Tariela, spokesperson of the Philippine Coast Guard for the West Philippine Sea, said Philippine authorities believe the incident was deliberate rather than an accidental

collision. Tiela said the China Coast Guard deliberately rammed a civilian government vessel on a humanitarian and livelihood mission. Video released by Philippine authorities shows the two vessels o parading at extremely close

footage, members of the Philippine crew can reportedly be heard warning one another to brace as the ships move dangerously close together. The collision caused visible structural damage to the BRP Datu Mag Salomat. Photographs released by the Philippine

Coast Guard showed bent and broken railings, damaged metal supports and stansions, displaced equipment, and debris scattered across sections of the vessel. Despite that damage, Philippine authorities said no crew members were injured. The Philippine Coast Guard also

said the confrontation did not immediately end after the collision. According to Manila's account, CCG 21585 later passed directly behind the Philippine fisheries vessel at a
