Nigeria's Colonial Past and Path to Independence
Nigeria, formerly recognized as the Royal Niger Company territories, derived its name from the powerful Niger River.
Initially, the region was divided into northern and southern protectorates, which later merged in 1914, leading to its eventual independence in 1960 and republican status by 1963.
