Malta Festival Chaos: Locals Branded Racist for Criticism

Authorities were forced to close down some events due to the escalating mayhem. These shocking scenes were met with outrage in Malta, yet received a media blackout in Britain, with local officials accused of racism for speaking out.

The 'Freedom Festival,' held from September 10th to 13th, experienced significant disruptions. Attendees ransacked a KFC, with some feeling entitled to simply walk in and take what they wanted. Street fights were observed, and several events had to be shut down prematurely. Many individuals attempted to barge into ticketed events without proper entry, causing further issues.

One notable incident occurred at 4:00 a.m. at a KFC, where individuals jumped over the counter and stole food due to impatience. Despite the restaurant's impending closure, the situation escalated into an issue, highlighting the widespread disorder.

Security personnel at the festival were reportedly scared to intervene during the KFC incident, allowing the disruption to continue. Numerous fights broke out in the crowds, and a significant amount of mess and rubbish was left scattered across the area. This widespread mayhem was deemed unnecessary and unwelcome by the island's residents.

One of the festival events was canceled, which only exacerbated existing issues. Jordan Galea Pace, Deputy Mayor of Swieqi, felt compelled to speak out despite the event not being directly in his locality. He noted that many others refrained from commenting or condemning such actions, highlighting a reluctance among some to address the problems publicly.

Malta has been increasingly addressing tourism issues, including previous problems with Italian tourists. Following significant local pressure regarding the recent festival, authorities are now taking action. Maltese residents have declared that "enough is enough," asserting that visitors must respect their country. Consequences for disrespectful behavior include deportation, which has already been applied to tourists causing mayhem.

The widespread disorder at the festival, including people jumping over KFC counters, stealing food, and fighting with security, would typically be front-page news in the UK. However, there has been a noticeable silence from British media outlets, suggesting a 'two-tier media blackout.' This contrasts with past incidents, such as when English football fans were criticized for their behavior abroad or in 2016 when England fans were assaulted by Russian hooligans, which received extensive coverage and blame.

Deputy Mayor Jordan Galea Pace, after speaking out about the festival's issues, was accused of racism. He refutes the idea that this is a 'cultural war,' asserting that the same standards should apply to everyone. He believes that if locals exhibit undesirable behavior, it should be condemned, just as it should be condemned for tourists. The host questioned why expecting decent, law-abiding behavior would be considered racist, especially when many Black Brits themselves condemned the behavior.

Pace stated he did not share this fear. He cited an instance where the Labor Minister for Security accused a journalist of racism for questioning the government's responsibility in attracting such parties to the island. Pace believes a consistent standard is needed for all tourists.

Deputy Mayor Pace emphasized that criticism for causing mayhem should not lead to accusations of racism, regardless of the tourists' origin. He advocates for a single standard: "Come to our country, respect our country. If you don't respect our country, you can go back home." This message, he believes, should resonate globally, asserting that expecting civil behavior is not racist.

The host questioned if those accusing critics of racism were implying that different standards should apply to specific groups. Many Black Brits themselves have condemned the behavior seen at the festival on platforms like TikTok, indicating that this is not a racial issue but one of poor conduct. Pace stated his sympathy lies with both Maltese residents and those British individuals who condemn the behavior, as it tarnishes the reputation of their community abroad.

Pace underscored the responsibility individuals have to represent their country positively when abroad, noting that he feels obliged to speak well of Malta when traveling. Malta has historically maintained a strong relationship with Britain, and the upcoming independence celebrations are ironic given the current aggravation caused by British tourists. The influx of disruptive British tourists is creating tensions in a country that is celebrating its freedom from British rule.

The host posited that it could instead be related to the ongoing conflict in tourist hotspots between locals who desire to maintain a normal life and the influx of disruptive visitors. This tension highlights the struggle for balance between tourism and resident well-being.

Pace lives in a priority residential area, Swieqi, which is directly next to a bustling party scene, leading to many homes being converted into short-term rentals. This transformation brings more tourists into residential areas, disrupting the daily lives of permanent residents. While acknowledging tourism's importance to Malta's economy, Pace emphasized that the island offers more than just party experiences and festival locations.

He emphasized that Malta is rich in history, arts, culture, and gastronomy, and this broader identity needs to be promoted. After years of lobbying, authorities have implemented on-the-spot fines to enforce discipline. Pace's message to British and other tourists is that Malta is not a "jungle" or a "playground" but a place with strict rules.

Violators will face immediate penalties and consequences. These measures are designed to maintain order and ensure respect for local norms.

Despite past similar events and the potential for future ones, the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) has vocally condemned the situation. Pace noted he was in contact with MHRA members who firmly stated that Malta 'deserves better.' They argued that such parties should either be denied permits or should not receive state funding and taxpayer subsidies. This stance highlights a growing opposition from key industry stakeholders.

This proactive approach seeks to rebrand Malta as a destination that demands respect for its culture and order.
