Tesla Scales Back Solar Roofs, Pursues Solar Factory

Sales of Solar Roof tiles have been virtually halted on Tesla's website. According to reports from Reuters and TechCrunch on August 24, 2026, Tesla stopped selling Solar Roof tiles on its website and redirected existing Solar Roof links to the general solar panel sales page. This is interpreted as an indication of a large-scale reduction or discontinuation of the Solar Roof business. However, sales and installation of Solar Roof tiles may still be possible through inventory held by some installers.

Tesla disclosed its consideration of building a solar cell manufacturing facility by submitting a JTI tax incentive application (J500) to the Texas Comptroller's office under the name 'Project Crystal Sun.' The application states that Tesla is currently evaluating whether it can develop a solar cell manufacturing facility within the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District in Fort Bend County, Texas. The project's investment is approximately $10.1 billion, and Tesla aims for commercial operation in the first quarter of 2029.

Project Crystal Sun is still in the application phase for tax incentives and is not yet a confirmed investment. The final site in Texas has not been determined, and Tesla is reportedly reviewing multiple sites within the U.S. Since the availability of tax incentives can significantly impact the project's economics, the incentive decision is expected to be a crucial variable in the final investment decision.

The equipment list in Tesla's application includes ingot, wafer, coating, and cell inspection equipment, indicating an aim for vertical integration in solar cell manufacturing. This suggests the possibility of internalizing the entire supply chain, from ingots to wafers, cells, and modules. However, it is unclear whether the products manufactured at this facility will be for Solar Roof tiles or standard modules used in energy storage devices like Megapacks, and Tesla has not officially stated that it will use this manufacturing facility as a supply chain instead of Solar Roofs.

The Solar Roof business is characterized by high on-site complexity, such as installing tiles to fit individual roof shapes and performing electrical work. This business model requires the on-site installation network to grow alongside product manufacturing. In contrast, solar cell and module manufacturing can be designed for repetitive, mass production of standardized products within a factory. This structural difference in difficulty and economic structure between the two businesses is analyzed as one reason why Tesla is scaling back its Solar Roof business and investing in solar manufacturing.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global solar production capacity is already in surplus, but the U.S. market is creating unique value. This is due to policy tools such as tariffs, tax credits, and loans aimed at resolving the problem of solar supply chain concentration in specific countries and supporting domestic manufacturing, as explained by the U.S. Department of Energy. In particular, institutional advantages like the 45X Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit offer significant economic benefits to companies establishing solar manufacturing facilities in the U.S., serving as a backdrop for Tesla's consideration of large-scale investment.
