Lib Dems Grilled on Potential Labour Pacts

Camilla Tominey opened by challenging the Liberal Democrats' stagnating poll ratings despite having won 72 seats in the last general election. She noted that the party's support remains in the low teens, leading some observers to question the longevity of Ed Davey's leadership. Tominey suggested that Davey might be considered a 'busted flush' due to the party's inability to significantly improve its standing.

Smart also pointed to eight consecutive years of local election victories, demonstrating consistent growth at the grassroots level. She further claimed a 150% increase in MSPs during recent Scottish elections, signaling broader momentum.

Camilla Tominey raised concerns about Ed Davey's public recognition, citing a survey where 42% of voters admitted they did not know who he was or could not describe him. Tominey expressed frustration over Davey's consistent refusal to appear on her show, suggesting this contributes to his low public profile.

Smart explained that Davey prioritizes substantive policy discussions over seeking viral moments, focusing on pressing challenges affecting constituents. She highlighted his deep commitment to social care, a deeply personal issue for him.

She criticized the Labour government's proposal of a three-year timeline to review social care funding, deeming it too long given the urgency of the issue. Smart mentioned that cross-party talks had taken place over the summer to explore faster solutions.

Tominey reminded viewers of Davey's past reputation for engaging in 'clown-like antics' to garner media attention, contrasting this with the image of a serious political leader.

He emphasized gold's universal understanding and acceptance as a store of value. Perry highlighted gold's historical outperformance against the pound, noting an average increase of over 11% annually over the last 25 years, and a significant 60% increase against the pound in just the past two years.

She cited their opposition to welfare cuts and their support for wealth and mansion taxes as examples of policy alignment. Tominey further accused the party of seeking to reverse Brexit and realign with Brussels, suggesting this approach aims to 'curry favour' with the government.

Lisa Smart argued that it is the duty of a responsible opposition to agree with the governing party when their policies align, while also holding them accountable when they differ. She mentioned Ed Davey's stance against certain government approaches regarding Donald Trump as an example of responsible opposition. Smart emphasized that constituents desire cross-party collaboration on major national issues, citing threats like Russian aggression and 'hybrid war' as reasons for cooperation.

She referenced Ed Davey's recent comments about being open to a deal with the Conservatives, despite the negative experiences of the last coalition. Tominey also mentioned the possibility of a pact with the Greens.

Lisa Smart asserted that the Liberal Democrats' primary goal is to maximize the number of elected Liberal Democrat MPs in the next election to gain the most power and implement their party values in government. She dismissed the idea of a deal with the Conservatives, citing ongoing efforts to fight them and prevent figures like Nigel Farage from gaining influence. Smart also noted observations of cross-party cooperation in local councils.

Camilla Tominey pressed Lisa Smart on whether the Liberal Democrats would consider a pact with major parties to block Nigel Farage and Reform UK. She pointed out a perceived shift in Ed Davey's rhetoric, recalling his previous strong stance against future coalitions with the Conservatives due to past grievances, particularly regarding tuition fees. Tominey suggested that the party might now be willing to entertain such pacts to counter Farage's influence.

Lisa Smart explained that a pact with the Conservatives would be 'a really weird choice' given the current political climate, where the Liberal Democrats are fighting them 'tooth and nail' in many constituencies. She highlighted the increasing difficulty in distinguishing Conservative rhetoric from Nigel Farage's messaging, citing defections to Reform UK as evidence of an ideological shift within the Conservative Party. Smart emphasized that such a pivot would contradict their ongoing efforts against the Conservatives.

Camilla Tominey concluded the interview by noting Lisa Smart's evasion of a direct 'no' regarding a potential pact with Labour. Smart pivoted to discussing her own constituency, Hazel Grove, rather than giving a definitive answer on national coalition possibilities. Tominey pointed out the 'distinct absence of a no' in Smart's response, leaving the question of a future Labour deal open.
