Clashing Security Frameworks
China and Japan hold deeply conflicting views on regional security, with Beijing asserting that Japan exaggerates external threats to justify its military expansion. China specifically criticized the inclusion of the U.S. Army's Typhon system in the Orient Shield 26 exercises, launched by Japan, the U.S., and Australia on September 8th. Beijing fears that the deployment of such advanced projectile systems will trigger an arms race in the region.
