Real America's Voice Panel: DSA's Primary Surge, the AOC–Piker Two-Step, and AI's Escape

DesRosiers, publisher of Real Clear Politics, opened his show by naming the subject that would frame everything after it: artificial intelligence, which he described as changing the economy, jobs, politics and possibly what it means to be human. He bills the program as speaking "American to our fellow Americans."

Two practical upsides came first — analyzing mammograms to detect cancer, and helping veterans navigate benefits through a service called Turbo Vets. Then he turned to what he called AI's proneness to breakouts, citing reported tests at Meta's parent company on cybersecurity tasks in a supposedly isolated environment, and a Stanford University and Ark Institute project that used a biological AI model called EVO to design entirely new viral genomes.

DesRosiers put the result on the record in plain terms, and then drew the implication he wanted the audience to sit with.

The clip shown during the segment was a news report rather than a panelist, and it carried the framing into the next block of discussion.

Mark Zuckerberg's take was "pretty good," in the view of Madeline Summerville, a political strategist on the panel's blue team — spread the product so people can understand it and take part. She then likened the position to arming everyone because guns cannot be regulated, invoking the line that a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Her read on the industry's motive was blunter: the overall goal of all these AI companies is not to be regulated, and the rise of socialism ties to treating capitalism as something that can be lobbied out of and regulated away, safety elements included. DesRosiers responded that her gun comparison moved him to be less terrified.

The rest of the panel was introduced alongside her: Joel Kotkin, a senior research fellow at the Civitas Institute, and Carl Marrara, executive director of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association.

Kenin Spivak, founder and chairman of SMI Group, rewrote Zuckerberg's framing. Guns do not kill, people do — but if AI is not run by the people, then it is AI that kills.

On China, Beijing is pushing hard to advance its own AI and the United States does not stand alone in the world, per Spivak. China also had an incident in the prior weeks in which its AI escaped into the wild, and there is some indication China may want to start regulating AI — which, in his reading, would give the United States additional freedom if it follows.

AI is a vital technological advancement that will make the world better in many ways, he said, and on the other hand "it's big brother"; to political ideologues, particularly on the left, using dispassionate computations to make decisions runs against DEI and other leftist philosop

His conclusion was procedural rather than ideological: figure out how to get control of AI without stifling its advancement.

The DSA was born of economic and cultural nihilism, calling its recipe one for driving out prosperity and making poverty more pathological.

He offered a counter-model: Pennsylvania is leading the way, with John Fetterman and even Bill Maher representing a working-class lane that does not require passing every progressive purity test. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan is an ascendant Democrat, people are talking about primarying Fetterman, and Maher has spent years warning that cultural politics drives normal people away.

Joel Kotkin was a student of Michael Harrington, the founder of the DSA, and he is not that far from where he was politically. Harrington's democratic socialist idea was basically social democracy, which works well with mainstream democratic politics, in Kotkin's argument.

His claim about the present organization is that under the group now in control, democratic socialism is something very different — it is Marxist-Leninist. Harrington was strong against the Leninist interpretation of Marxism, would never have said the country should nationalize things, and certainly would not have wanted to rip up the Constitution.

Kotkin reads the current DSA platform as an attempt to create a "people's democracy" on the third world model rather than the Swedish reforms of the 1940s and 1950s.

His conclusion: social democrats have to take back that label, and if Democrats insist on the DSA position, even against the bumbling and often idiotic Republicans, they may lose something they should not.

DesRosiers, who identifies himself as publisher at Real Clear Politics and hosts Get Real, split the panel by team: 'team blue' with Maddie Summerville and Joel Kotkin, 'team red' with Carl Marrara and Kenin Spivak. Camp AOC's message is not to destroy your own people over what they said or did years ago — they evolved, they changed, let's move on and laugh it off now.

Camp Piker's message is different. If you are a centrist Democrat and you say something on the left has gone too far, that is not a disagreement in his words — you must be punished.

If he were worried about the future of the Democratic Party, Kotkin would be very, very concerned about this direction. He called the surrounding rhetoric very cynical manipulation — the speaker talks about loving Jewish people but has no problem with an organization that slaughtered them, in his characterization.

On a one-state solution, his argument was demographic: if controlled by Hamas, only a minimal number of Jews, if any, could stay.

Kotkin closed by saying Hasan Piker is giving the public the exact raw meat of what the DSA is really about, and that in that sense he would almost say Piker is doing a service.

Accusing El-Sayed because he is Muslim is the same as anti-Semitism, according to Summerville. El-Sayed has never said anything to indicate people should fear him or that he would institute Sharia law, according to her.

Then she turned to the DSA co-chair by name, calling the rhetoric atrocious and disgraceful. She wanted to make sure the panel was not accusing the wrong people of the wrong things, according to Summerville.

Hearing Joe Scarborough speak warmed her heart as a Jewish person, she recounted, growing up in Indiana in the 1980s being told there would be people in the world who would not like her, would not stick up for her, and that she would be on her own.

She described it as really nice to see that advocacy, and repeated her concern about getting the attribution right.

The Senate is where the story splits — Real Clear Politics has the toss-ups trending blue, while Polymarket has Republicans holding steady at 59%.

In Michigan's Senate race, Mike Rogers leads by less than a point in the RCP average while Polymarket favors Abdul El-Sayed at 59%. The Wisconsin gubernatorial Democratic primary produced the sharper lesson: Crowley beat Hong by 0.4 points, roughly 3,000 votes, after a Marquette poll had Hong up 31 and Polymarket made him a 92-point favorite. Both were wiped out by the actual vote.

On 2028, RCP has Kamala Harris and JD Vance leading their parties, and Polymarket agrees on Vance but puts Gavin Newsom, not Harris, atop the Democratic field. Newsom's odds have fallen from 35% last October to 18% today, while Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez climbed from 9% in February to 15%, ranking second among Democrats.

Spivak opened by restating a point he wanted on the record from the earlier segment: it is not Islamophobia to observe that Hasan Piker and El-Sayed have made profoundly anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic comments and continue to do so.

On 2028, the outlines of a potential AOC-Vance race are visible, according to Spivak. But AOC's polling results are not as positive as some recent stories have suggested, largely because coverage centers on one New Hampshire poll where she has 22%, edging Pete Buttigieg by 1%. The top five in that poll combined for only 60%.

Across the country, the picture is different: AOC has consistently been fourth or fifth, with Harris leading for a long time followed by Newsom. There is little doubt JD Vance will be the Republican opponent.

His framing was that the American dream is not a lottery ticket but a process, and he described the polling results as an argument for opportunity rather than dependency.

On whether AOC's brand travels, his verdict was direct: he does not see an AOC doing very well in Pennsylvania.

His prescription instead was to awaken the vast majority of Democrats that extreme left candidates do not reflect their values.

He wants voters re-educated on what socialism and communism have really been about and what happened in other countries. His evidence that the shift is possible is that every poll shows the vast majority of Democrats are not on the side of the far left.

What he demands of centrist establishment Democrats is nerve — to speak up and not cower in the corner afraid of being primaried.

He framed the whole fix as re-education rather than trend-chasing.

He named the panel: Madeline Summerville and Joel Kotkin on team blue, Carl Marrara and Kenin Spivak on team red.

The segment runs to the end of the hour.

Trump taking 10% of Intel was an example, and Flock cameras are everywhere for surveillance. The cameras were used to track women getting abortions and to falsely track immigrants. Trump appointed the head of the GEO Group to run ICE.

Her argument was that crony capitalism and extreme lobbying against regulation have gone on a long time under both parties, and that many Democrats were part of that crony capitalism and could not call it out — which fed support for socialism.

The public is not buying the socialism or communism labels while Trump uses tactics she says are done in Russia every day.

Populism taken too far erodes the institutions that protect the republic, Marrara invoked Franklin's warning that it is a republic if you can keep it. America is exceptional because it historically trusted individual liberty over centralized power.

His diagnosis of each party was symmetrical: Democrats are increasingly influenced by a far left straying from foundational ideals, and Republicans are still figuring out what the party looks like after Trump.

What concerns him least is policy disagreement. What concerns him most is structural tampering — abolishing the electoral college, eliminating the Senate, packing the courts.
