Starship's First Orbital Flight Unlocks $100 Trillion Market

SpaceX intends to build extensive infrastructure for future businesses, encompassing supercomputers, terraforming technology, and a new facility in Louisiana to support these ambitious endeavors.

Jo Bhakdi's model projects a current cost of $68 billion, anticipated to fall to $43 billion by 2035, while Elon Musk explains that actual costs could be even lower by 2028 as launch expenses decline.

The recent Starship flight achieved multiple orbits around Earth and successfully deployed 26 commercial V3 Starlink satellites, marking a significant technical achievement.

The flight also confirmed the effective performance of the heat shield and demonstrated a soft ocean landing.

Analysts estimate Starship is within three test flights of achieving capture by Mechazilla, a critical step towards rapid reusability.

Connectivity remains the primary role for Starlink, leading Jo Bhakdi to note that its market capitalization is likely capped at $1 trillion.

The host of the program, Herbert, believes Starlink will serve as the essential connectivity layer for millions of AI agents and future robots, vehicles, and compute tasks operating 24/7, leading to exponential compute demand growth.

Bhakdi maintains that the compute business offers greater, theoretically unlimited scaling potential compared to internet connectivity.

Starship, equipped with 39 Raptor engines and a payload capacity exceeding 100 tons to orbit, is the most powerful rocket ever flown and is uniquely designed for full and rapid reusability.

SpaceX is concurrently developing massive AI training clusters in Memphis and South Haven, spanning 2.5 million square feet and utilizing millions of GPUs, requiring over 2 gigawatts of compute power.

Since 2024, investment in the Midsouth region for these facilities has surpassed $90 billion.

Grokbot is defined as a system of AI agents capable of performing real-world work, with its integration into the Grokbot harness improving conversational performance.

SpaceX plans to deploy thousands of StarMine satellites that will utilize space-based cooling, solar power, and laser data transmission.

Starship is integral to NASA's Artemis program, designed to land crew and cargo on the Moon for building a permanent lunar base.

The company's ultimate objective extends to creating a self-sustaining city on Mars, supported by an expansion of launch pads in Texas, Florida, and Louisiana.

Wall Street estimates for orbital compute range from $160 billion to $170 billion per gigawatt, reflecting current costs, while Jo Bhakdi's model projects a more optimistic $68 billion, declining to $43 billion by 2035.

These discrepancies arise because significant orbital compute deployment is not expected until around 2028, and launch costs, a major component, are rapidly decreasing.

The $68 billion estimate includes $30 billion to $35 billion for Nvidia GPUs, leaving $15 billion to $20 billion allocated for launch expenses.

Elon Musk claims a hundredfold capacity, causing the speaker to argue that the Mach 33 estimate of a tenfold bandwidth increase is an underestimation.

Elon Musk has stated that Starlink is increasingly likely to carry the majority of Earth's IP traffic in the long term, effectively becoming the internet for global connectivity.

Jo Bhakdi posits that Elon Musk has achieved 'escape velocity,' shifting his focus beyond mere profit to gaining control over global intelligence infrastructure.

This long-term vision includes leveraging near-sun solar energy, which could provide a significant energy advantage over competitors and support future endeavors.

Jo Bhakdi emphasizes that recent SpaceX milestones represent a massive, transformative development that many people are currently underestimating.

Projects like Starlink and StarMine are identified as game-changers within this new era of space infrastructure.

The strategic plan includes deploying gigawatts of compute power into space by 2028, underscoring the rapid scaling anticipated.

Elon Musk has discussed an ambitious goal of increasing Starship's flight frequency to once per hour, a pace that would dramatically accelerate space deployment.

Jo Bhakdi draws parallels to the Dutch and British East India Trading Companies, which achieved vast economic expansion and colonization using wooden ships by effectively managing capital.

Bhakdi argues that just as maritime trade with high profit margins fueled historical economic engines, high-margin revenue from orbital compute will drive the new space economy.

Jo Bhakdi contends that there is virtually infinite demand for compute power, making supply — particularly Starship launches — the only remaining bottleneck.

He dismisses re-entry risks as largely solved, citing recent successful Starship flights as proof of concept.

SpaceX and Nvidia engineers are expected to readily adapt current hardware for space-ready racks, shifting the focus from technical challenges to rapid execution.

Jo Bhakdi asserts that SpaceX's development speed is surpassing initial projections, continuously exceeding expectations.

The precision demonstrated in Starship launches is highlighted as a testament to the company's technical prowess, setting a new benchmark for spaceflight.

Bhakdi emphasizes that developing and deploying satellite infrastructure has become a comparatively simple, secondary task for SpaceX due to their advancements in launch capabilities.

Jo Bhakdi estimates that orbital build costs are only about 10-15% higher than their terrestrial counterparts, making them highly competitive.

This cost premium is justified by avoiding significant terrestrial delays and infrastructure bottlenecks, while also benefiting from near-free energy costs in space, potentially eliminating traditional maintenance overhead.

Bhakdi argues that if orbital costs remain within 15% of terrestrial costs, it effectively creates total market equivalence, favoring the advantages of space-based operations.

He likens orbital compute to a new frontier that transcends traditional geographical and logistical limitations, opening up unprecedented possibilities for intelligence processing.

Building data centers on Earth involves complex permits, local opposition, and high energy costs, creating significant barriers to rapid expansion.

In contrast, satellite factories could theoretically produce gigawatt-scale data centers using conveyor-belt manufacturing, allowing for endless, efficient deployment into orbit via Starship.

This factory-based model offers massive economies of scale, dramatically reducing the per-unit cost compared to the traditional approach of building each terrestrial facility from scratch.

Jo Bhakdi notes that skepticism regarding orbital compute is significantly lower than for previous SpaceX projects like Optimus or Cybertruck, suggesting a growing acceptance of the company's capabilities.

The market valuation of SpaceX has already reached $2 trillion, which Bhakdi interprets as strong confidence in the viability and potential of its space infrastructure plans among investors.
