Representative Lee Jin-sook has filed a defamation lawsuit against Kim Min-seok, chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, amid conflict arising from a forum to re-examine the May 18th Democratization Movement.

Representative Lee Jin-sook underwent questioning as a complainant at the Yeongdeungpo Police Station on the 6th regarding the lawsuit she filed against Democratic Party Chairman Kim Min-seok on charges of defamation. This lawsuit stems from Chairman Kim Min-seok's past remarks that he would make it impossible for Representative Lee Jin-sook to set foot in South Korea.
Representative Lee Jin-sook explained that Chairman Kim Min-seok used insulting terms towards her because she held an academic forum to re-examine the May 18th Democratization Movement at the National Assembly on August 13th. Representative Lee criticized the Democratic Party's assertion that the evaluation of the May 18th history is already concluded, and their actions to pressure academic inquiry.
Representative Lee Jin-sook emphasized that she is not legally denying the Gwangju Democratization Movement, and as a citizen of South Korea, she cannot disregard the May 18th Democratization Movement established by law. While respecting the current name of the May 18th Democratization Movement, Representative Lee argued for the necessity of deeply analyzing its historical reality academically to ascertain its causes.
According to a public opinion survey conducted by Cheonji Ilbo on September 1st with 14 respondents, 69.7% of respondents said there was a need to disclose the list of persons of national merit from the May 18th Democratization Movement. Representative Lee Jin-sook cited these survey results to raise the issue of a lack of transparency in the selection process for May 18th persons of national merit.
Representative Lee Jin-sook pointed out that unlike other persons of national merit who undergo review by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, May 18th persons of national merit are selected by Gwangju City, and currently by the integrated Gwangju-Jeonnam Special City. She further mentioned that May 18th persons of national merit receive specific benefits, such as a 10% bonus on civil service exams, and that there are problems with how national budgets support them through pensions and scholarships.
Representative Lee Jin-sook stated that as of 8:30 AM today, the number of citizens opposing her disciplinary action and expulsion has exceeded 187,600. She added that the petition submitted to the National Assembly for the withdrawal of her expulsion is also nearing 65,000 signatures. Representative Lee interpreted this large-scale signature campaign as a clear signal that the public is interested in the issue of re-examining the May 18th Democratization Movement in the National Assembly. Furthermore, Representative Lee emphasized that the public supports efforts to uncover the truth and that the demand for the disclosure of the May 18th national merit list is growing.
