Russia Escalates Attacks on Ukrainian Infrastructure

Social media footage captured a drone strike on the South Bridge on Friday, damaging transport links for three million residents.

The city's three million residents rely heavily on these bridges for daily commuting and transport, with social media footage capturing a drone strike on the South Bridge on Friday.

Reports indicate that Vladimir Putin has instructed military leaders to abandon established rules of war when shelling Ukraine, signaling an expansion of targets beyond front lines.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian forces aim to strike bridges, data centers, internet and mobile networks, hospitals, kindergartens, schools, and universities.

The United Nations reported a 55% increase in civilian casualties during the first eight months of this year compared to the same period last year.

An average of over 400 people are killed or injured each week, exacerbating what a UN official described as an 'unfathomable pain to civilians' and a threat of 'even greater disaster'.

Kyiv is increasingly operating as a frontline city due to persistent attacks on bridges, a critical concern for the approximately one million residents living on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River.

Despite active drone strikes, civilians exhibit signs of desensitization, continuing to walk across damaged bridges, while attacks on data centers have destabilized mobile internet services.

Residents are also preparing for winter, anticipating significant challenges related to heating and power infrastructure amid ongoing strikes.

President Zelenskyy's statements about Russia's targeting strategy are informed by classified intelligence briefings, indicating a deliberate focus on non-military infrastructure.

Russia is targeting bridges and other infrastructure that were previously within its reach, a move aimed at inciting panic in Kyiv and forcing political concessions from Ukraine.

Additionally, Russia has issued warnings to foreign diplomats, stating that their security in Ukraine cannot be guaranteed.

Many residents who could not cope with war conditions have already left Kyiv, leaving those remaining to face the psychological toll of continuous attacks.

The frequent jet-powered drone strikes have resulted in nearly 24 hours of air raid alerts in a single day, causing significant exhaustion among the population.

Intercepting these new and advanced drones has become a critical and ongoing challenge for Ukraine's defense forces.

Military expert Marina Miron emphasizes the need for caution with official claims, noting that Russia is adapting its approach to Ukraine's decentralized systems to create strategic effects.

Russia's strategy targets Ukraine's decentralized energy and production systems, aiming to destroy its military-industrial complex.

This targeting methodology is rooted in a Soviet-era approach, which views the adversary as an integrated system rather than isolated units.

Russia's attacks on logistics and production systems are part of a broader operational scheme designed to weaken enemy defenses, according to Marina Miron.

These operations are not isolated but complement battlefield maneuvers, making it easier for Russian forces at the front to defeat the opposing army.

The narrative that Russia is 'taking off its gloves' serves as a message directed at Western audiences, according to military expert Marina Miron.

Ukraine faces critical deficits in air defense systems and interceptors as winter approaches, making the narrative a strategic effort to secure continued or increased international support.

Western observers have long accused Russia of violating the laws of armed conflict, which suggests that the recent 'taking off its gloves' narrative is primarily an informational operation.

Single strikes are insufficient for collapse; Russia's goal is to accumulate damage, with the recovery speed of Ukrainian infrastructure being the critical factor for success.

Russia targets logistical routes to hinder supply lines to the Donbas and strikes production sites to restrict Ukraine's access to FPV drones, aiming for an operational breakthrough through simultaneous pressure.

Russia's ability to maintain high-frequency strikes indicates an accumulated capacity despite Ukrainian countermeasures, a tactic reminiscent of General Surovikin's strategy from October 2022.

The necessity of continued strikes implies Russia has not yet achieved its desired strategic effect, underscoring a strategic frustration as the anticipated collapse of the Ukrainian system has not occurred.

Kyiv has demonstrated the capability to strike deep into Russian oil infrastructure, a tactic Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Reuters will remain a central pillar of the defensive strategy.

Ukraine has previously demonstrated its capability to strike Russian oil infrastructure, signaling a reciprocal strategy in the ongoing conflict.

The increased frequency of Russian strikes, part of an established military logic dating back to General Surovikin in October 2022, indicates Russia has built up its capacity despite Ukrainian counter-attacks.

However, the persistence of these strikes serves as proof that Russia has not yet achieved its desired strategic goals; if the Ukrainian system were truly collapsing, these repeated long-range campaigns would not be necessary.
