Mayor Adanech Abebe's Re-election Speech

Citizens showed great interest in building democracy and proved the importance of peace and popular participation. Mayor Abebe expressed her gratitude to all citizens and supporters who supported and elected her with their thoughts, morals, finances, time, and knowledge for this historic success.

Mayor Abebe announced that the new council will include 12 political parties, 23 members from competing parties, and one independent candidate.

Mayor Abebe emphasized that all Addis Ababa residents, regardless of whether they voted for her or not, are citizens with equal rights and will receive the same services. This demonstrates the city administration's commitment to building a culture that democratically respects diverse political opinions.

The city government announced that it will no longer evaluate development performance solely based on project numbers or quantitative reports, but will instead use tangible changes in citizens' lives as measurement indicators.

Specifically, it outlined key evaluation criteria such as reducing the financial burden on mothers, securing quality jobs for youth, and improving access to government services. It expressed its commitment to assessing city performance primarily based on the impact of improvements in housing, education, health, and transportation infrastructure on citizens' actual lives.

Mayor Abebe clarified that power is a responsibility to citizens, not a means for private gain, and pledged to build a strong social system that does not tolerate corruption.

She promised to reorganize the city government system to provide citizen-centered, fast, and modern services, and to foster Addis Ababa as a core hub for the 'Digital Ethiopia 2030' vision through digital transformation. She emphasized that government services, as a right of citizens, should not be traded for money or bribes.

The city government plans to focus on curbing inflation and reducing living costs through increased productivity.

It stated that a key objective is to create broad employment opportunities for youth and women, and it will pursue sustainable economic growth by expanding infrastructure investment, modernizing trade systems, and supporting innovation.

She added that the city will strive to stabilize people's livelihoods by providing wide-ranging job opportunities for all citizens, including youth and women, expanding investment, fostering small businesses and SMEs, and actively supporting technological innovation.

Mayor Abebe presented a vision to make Addis Ababa a city that is safe and guarantees fair opportunities, stating that the rule of law and lasting peace will be the foundation for urban growth.

She urged the leadership to transparently acknowledge mistakes and citizens to actively take ownership, expressing her commitment to pursuing tangible changes in citizens' lives, taking past achievements as a starting point.

She emphasized the importance of creating a smooth business environment for companies and investors, and fostering an environment where citizens feel proud as owners of the city. She cited the rule of law and sustainable peace as the foundation for urban development.
