Paul Bakaus emphasized, "there's this middle ground that we haven't explored enough like what is the exact level of control? How can we insert the human in the loop at the exact right time?" Conversely, fully automated, AI-driven generation, while fast, often lacks the necessary granular human intervention needed to achieve specific aesthetic or functional outcomes. The core challenge lies in determining the precise 'altitude'—the optimal level of abstraction—at which humans can interact with AI to achieve effective design results, striking a balance between efficiency and detailed control.

Direct manipulation of granular elements like padding, margins, and spacing is often too low-level for effective collaboration with AI design agents. Such detailed adjustments can be inefficient and counterproductive when working with AI, which operates better at a higher level of abstraction.

Early AI design efforts, particularly those from 2022, frequently resulted in predictable and cliché patterns, such as pervasive purple gradients, indicating a lack of nuanced control over aesthetic output.

Instead, the focus is on enabling agents to respond to more abstract, qualitative inputs, allowing designers to steer the AI's creative process with adjectives and verbs (e.g., 'bolder,' 'quieter,' 'distill') rather than pixel-by-pixel directives, thereby achieving more sophisticated and human-preferred design outcomes.
